Gary Hess (AlfaDawg) appeared at about 2:15 PM on Sunday. We went to visit Chief Motor Machinists Mate Richard Lemert and took him his copy of The Goatlocker. Dick immediately began telling stories about Australia and escapes from Japanese Destroyers until we had to leave to allow AlfaDawg to get home at the time he had promised (and to allow him to get to the chat room).
I think we toured every place in NE Iowa. Found some of Buggy's relatives, and they soon discovered that Merle couldn't speak German. (G).... Saturday nite ate roasted hog, baked beans, loose meat?????, salad and beer.
I gotta tell ya, guys for those of you who didn't make it, you sure missed one of the best we've had so far. Weather was great, entertainment was wonderful, food was absolutely superior, two star ate a tenderloin that measured about 10' across, conversations flowed till the late hours every evening, and no lies were told, not even John E., and John C. doesn't look a day over 40, even though he is rumored to be close to 90.
Kinda nice to have a face to put with a name now. Buggy is a little taller than I had him figured, but still a cocky little so and so. The highlight of the trip was when we went to the Rest Home to present the plaque to the retired Motor Machinist Mate Chief (SS) Richard Lemert . Kind of shed a tear on that one. Made his day and it was his birthday. We all stepped back and gave him a hand salute and he met us eye to eye, ready two!! Wow, that was great.
There is no doubt about it, we are an exclusive organization, I was going to say fraternity, but thought maybe Barb would smack me, and we have a unique distinction not found in any other orginization, and that is when I shake hands with another Chief Petty Officer, I know who s/he is and they know me. We don't have to spend much time getting acquainted cause we already have much in common. Sparky
