Company 253, 1st Regiment, Chief Clark BMC Company Commander. Where are Jim Hawes from northwestern Pa. (went to the USS Vulcan AR 5 as an EM), Dave Eccles, Stan Lawson, Ken Park, Hal Wilkins (went to the USS Nipmuc ATF 157 as an FN) and all you other boots from 253? 1 Dec. '54 - 1 April '55: IC "A" School at Great Lakes, Class 2425. We were called the Lucky 'Leven. Where are Vince Troia, Don Benz, Cassidy and you other snipes? 15 April '55 - 8 July '56: USS Gen. H. W. Butner TAP 113, Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) out of the Brooklyn Army Base. Ferry service for troops (US Army and Air Force) and dependents from US to Bremerhaven Germany with an occasional stop at Southampton England. Was in the IC and EM gang. Where are Stan Miller, an EM from Baltimore, R. J. Misiano an ICman from Revere, Ma. (he went to the USS Henley DD 762), Tim Murray, IC3 who went to the USS Pecatonica AOG 57, John Bourdagh from Stillwater, Mn., W. R. Estes from Paducah, Ky., Cliff Horn from Louisville, Ky., Jerry Mahar from St. Charles, Mich., Joe Motyl from Fort Johnson, NY., Mike Pore from Kalamazoo, Mich., J. A. Patrick from Nelagoney, OK., Elliot Silverman from Philly, skinny Don Schuman from Jersey City (skinny enough to squeeze thru an open port hole to get into the officers galley and steal food while we were in the yards in Newport News) and my good buddy Fred Festler from Northfield, Minn. Made 14 round trips to Europe in 15 months while I was aboard. Lots of sea time but with a great bunch of shipmates. Great liberty in Bremerhaven during those years of US occupation in Germany. 8 July '56 - 22 Oct. '57: USS Allagash AO 97 home port in Newport, RI. Was an IC2 in the IC room and EM shop. Great duty. Did Midshipmen and reserve cruises in the Med, Arctic and Carribean. Some great liberty ports especially the 5 days we were at Bangor, Northern Ireland. Wow, everybody fell in love. The liberty was so good I volunteered for Shore Patrol the 2 days I had the duty. I've often thought about Barbara Caulifield, a very nice Irish gal I met there. For you tin can sailors we refueled, we were also your movie exchange via the high line. Hope your movie selections met your expectations. How about Shorty Fournier from MA., Cecil Sorenson from Washington as I recall, Ballinger whose father was a minister but you'd never know it by the way he carried on while on the beach, Van Fossen from Ohio(?), my good buddy Mike Smith from Carthage and Utica, NY, EM2 Palmer from ?, Pat "Foot" Proudfoot from Rockford, IL and Francis "Frenchy" Beaudoin from Ct. Just recently had the pleasure of calling Frenchy and Foot on the phone. Also Andy "Sonny" Wolk from Hastings On Hudson, NY. It was great. As you Gash sailors might recall, our cook was called "Light Lunch". Pretty clever guy. He used to save some egg shells when we had fresh eggs to throw in the scrambled eggs he served that were made from powdered eggs after we were at sea for a couple weeks. It took most of the cruise to wise up. 28 October 1957: mustered out of active duty. I was on a kiddie cruise. One last item: had the pleasure of doing a Tiger Cruise on the USS John C. Stennis CVN 74 August of 1998 on its return home from 6 months in the Persian Gulf. Met the ship in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and joined the crew and air wing on last leg of their trip home to San Diego, 6 days. Was the guest of my son Christopher Jolliff, AME2 with VFA 131 Wildcats (F18's). What a trip. Sure were great times. Will never forget. |
