He served on (to name a few) the USS Saratoga, USS Lexington, USS Kearsarge, and the USS Missouri. He was on the Lex in May 1942 when she went down in the Coral Sea, and was one of the last guys off the ship. He spent several weeks with 20 other guys on one of the Tongan islands, awaiting resue. This finally came in the form of a pair of Dutch tramps, which "gave them a ride" to San Diego. I'm looking for any information on the two Dutch ships or anyone who served on the Lex at that time, especially a survivor of the stay on Tonga. Anyone with questions or answers (!) can email me directly at rlschuck@earthlink.net. My grandfather passed away in 1995. |

Your site was recommened to me by Mark Hacala Navy Memorial Foundation Am volunteer aboard USS Yorktown CV10 at Patriots Point and have been looking for the old Bugle calls, boatswains calls, sound of the claxon and all the old calls to duty/action/etc. Primarily General Quarters, Flight Quarters, Chow Down, Liberty, etc..so I can let the guests I take on tours of the ship, listen to the actual sounds we heard. Was wondering if you know of any source for these old calls? You have a great web page..Thanks.. Nope, never made Chief. Was asked to go back out on the Boxer in 45 on our way home, and was promised Chief in one year, , but wanted to get home. Of course I re-enlisted :)) Don't know how radioman could ever get in trouble, but I managed:) Even got a seven day liberty restriction for "holding a conversation and gambling in Officers Country, one nite at Okinawa campaign:) Seven of us got caught by Condition Zebra on our way to battle stations, so of course we did some talking:) But...we did not have any cards, and were too nervous anyhow to gamble, since the 5" guns, 40mm and 20mm guns were going off above us, and the squak box was always yelling, Bogies diving on the Task Force..Tried to tell the exec that but he took the word of the guy who put us on report...ah, my good old Navy day:) Would't trade them for a million dollars. |

Name: Howard True From: Hoover, AL Time: 2000-05-19 04:16:38 Comments: Congratulations to all you Chiefs - I didn't make it although I enlisted in 1940 as AS ($21.00/Mo.) and progressed through S2, S1, SK3, SK2 & SK1. I had to turn down Warrant APC in 1943 when I passed the exams to become a fleet appointee to USNA as a Midshipman. I graduated from the Naval Academy in 1948 comfortably in the middle 220 of 420. I held the ranks of Ensign, Lt(jg),and LT and switched from regular to reserve in 1954 after completing all obligated duty. The Navy was in a severe cutback and literally begged many of us to make the switch. I made LCDR and CDR while in reserve mobilization units. I served on USS RAPIDAN, USS Raleigh, USS RANDOLPH, USS CONE, USS WISCONSIN, USS OKALOOSA, USS RATON, USS GAINARD and USS HAYNSWORTH while on active duty or as a Midshipman and enjoyed my Navy life very much. I am now 77 with severe ASBESTOSIS and on oxygen 7/24. My asbestos exposure came partially from asbestos insulation on those old WW2 ships and especially from the summer of 1941 demolition of old NTS NORVA buildings - I need affidavits from any of you that helped in this demolition and I will supply affidavits to any of you that so served and now have lung cancer. The VA Administrative side would like to write us off and will unless we raise cain to get the proper recognition. Write me at 3437 Chapel Lane, Hoover AL, 35226. |

Name: Dave Foley (ABH2, USS Independence CV 62) Website: The Sparrow Hawk Speaks From: Newburgh, New York Time: 2000-06-14 01:32:55 Comments: Ahoy Shipmates: Can it be that the old fossil burning carriers have given up their screws and rudders to have them put on the new nuke carriers? I heard this from an old USS Independence shipmate who was at her decomissioning. I've tried to get this info from the new nuke pukes but no one wants to write me back. Might be that this info is classified? I know the "hooks" have been stripped of the USS Forrestal and USS Saratoga, I've seen this for myself. I figure some one out there might be able to answer this question or at least point me in the right direction. I only want this infomation as it will keep the spirit of these old boats alive. No ofense to you guys who glow in the dark but I miss the smell of burning ship's diesel. The ships that were stripped were the USS Ranger, USS Midway and USS Independence the parts went to the USS Truman, and USS Reagan. I don't know this to be fact, it's all scuttlebutt at this point. Anybody out there have a hook in Newport News? |
