I'm still looking for my shipmates who served on the USS Independence CV-62 from 80-83, served at the NETC Newport, RI Brig 83-87 and went to boot camp in Great Lakes and were in Company 79-267! The Forrestall, Saratoga and Iowa are moth balled at the old SIMA Pier in Newport, RI. Sad sight to see these proud ships sitting idle but none the less it's worth a look if you are so inclined. To all shipmates past, present and future the best to you and yours. Fair winds and following seas....

A lot to enjoy and a lot to put up with but experience worth a million bucks. Thought about subs about the same time the Thresher was lost, decided idea not so good. I noticed some sailors from the Adams on log, but didn't get date of service. We all belong to a unique club! Thanks

Comments: Well done Chief! I served aboard USS Thornback SS418 from 1958 to 60. Came aboard in Key West from MM School and Sub School at age 18. After time in the deck gang and mess cooking I spent all my time in after engine room. Served as oiler, then throttleman and oil king and discharged at age 21 as MM2(SS) in Charleston. Can this old salt still rig for snorkle -- you bet. I believe I could still operate the GDU or blow #2 sanitary tank. Any old shipmates care to write? Now retired from publishing business.

Born into subs, crawled through em spending duty nights there Whaoo, Bugara, Tunny, Sandlance, then went through the blow-an-go to wind up doing time on the SSBN 626 gold from 70-74. Guam really does suck. Daniel Webster tried to kill me on the last patrol with a fire, flooding, missle emergency, and then trying to pull a vacumn on the diesel compartment. Anybody remember that mess? Well someone has to log on from the ol DW.

Comments: I was in Philadelphia last week (March 14, 2000) and stopped by the shipyard. The security gate folks were gracious enough to allow me a pass to drive in and look for our old ship (they would have been even more supportive if I had remembered to bring my old military ID or Luce ID). They did not have a list of which ships are there, but pointed me in the right direction. To my great surprise and pleasure, I found Luce tied up stern-in at the Rowan Avenue pier, between USS MacDonough and USS Farragut (both DDG ships of the same class as Luce). From the pier, I couldn't see the bow, but it appeared that all the major and minor equipment is still in place, launcher and radars, boat davits, antennae, etc. are all still there. They had a prow on Farragut, with planks over to Luce and Mac, and yard birds were walking around onboard. They wouldn't let me on (of course).I had read somewhere that Luce was decommissioned in 91, and thought that she was scrapped, so it came as a great surprise to find her in mothballs like this. Next to these three ships were USS Sellers, USS Sampson, and USS Charles F Adams, these being in various states of disrepair though looking mostly intact and mothballed. There were about 50 ships of different types tied up there.I can't begin to describe the rush when I saw Luce. It brought back a major flood of great memories from my years as an electrician on Luce, from the summer of 77 when I first went onboard (Philadelphia shipyard overhaul) to the day I walked off in November '80 (Mayport). Best Wishes EM2 Ron Porter

Comments: Looking for bubble heads that were on the George C Marshall SSBN 654 (GOLD) from 1967 to 1970. That's when family grams were only 15 words, and a mess cook locked himself in cooler during half way night because he had to much wine! Capt. Gooding and his cats, that he would bring aboard that would get lost for days. what ever happened to chief Nixon? Are you still there chief? Woh! 30 years, but its still in my blood! once a bubble head always one!

Comments: My name is Alan Robinson ,Ex FTG/FC 1 SS/SW Served on SSBN 617,Alexander Hamilton Gold Crew 81-83, SSN 591,USS Shark from 83-84, also volunteered to re-comm the USS Iowa BB61 , served on that magnificent ship from 84-86. I had the somewhat rare opportunity to serve on both subs and surface ships(skimmers/targeta HAHA) but my heart is really with the BOATS. Thanks for the great homepage for us Bubbleheads, I was sad to see both of my old boats are now "razor blades" so it is nice to have a place to fellowship with old shipmates. Does anyone know a site for "Live Chat" for Bubbleheads? I welcome all E-mail. Thanks Alan Robinson (amrobinson@cleanweb.net)

Comments: First Qualified SS on board the USS Grouper SS214 in 1964. Went on to the USS Henry Clay SSBN 625 (Gold) in 1965, and after seven patrols left the service in October,1968. Was a "forward puke" working in the Navigation Center and also Sonar. Good to see a site dedicated to the submarine service. It was one of the most interesting things I've ever done before or since.
