Comments: This is my second entry in the Deck Log. My first was 5 years ago, just after I made Chief. On July 1st I become a a CWO. My fellow Chiefs in the John L Hall mess have been giving me a lot of shit about being a quitter. Perhaps they are right! I'm a 3rd generation Chief and love everything about being a Chief, so why am I quitting? I've been asking myself that for 8 months now! I came to the realization that I'm a Sailor and this is what I do shortly after making Chief. I used to try and figure out what I was going to do after I grew up (if I retired at 20). I could never come up with anything that would provide the challenges and gratification I get in the Navy. Job satisfation is the number one thing. "All this, and we get paid too", is a phrase I use a lot. 30 years and then I'll find something to do! Let's see first sub was a little ole' boat named the Tullibee, damn near put Scorpion and Thresher 3 section back about 1978 when the shaft broke on a Med Run, anyone out there remember that? Got to do a shore tour in England from there. Went on T-Hulls, HMJ amd Alaska with a tour as a "GODDAMNED" Detailer, in between. Retired from Comsubgru 9 in 1996. Worked my ass off but joined the Nav as a High school drop-out, got Ged and ended up with my own parking spot and office with a window. Who'd a thunk it! It was a great career and I was fortunate enough to have worked with some fantastic individuals.

Ahoy mates. Had a varied career between the TAR program and USN service. Started my career in the Naval Reserve while still in high school. Bootcamp 10 weeks at glorious Great Lakes then onboard the USS Remey (DD 688) and on to the USNS Rose (TAP-126). Served at various Naval Reserve Centers in NJ, PA, GA and DE. Went back to the U.S. Navy in 1980 onboard the USNS Waccamaw (TAO 108). Last seaduty station USS Saratoga (CVA-60) 1981 to 1984. Retired in Aug 87 from NAS Jax. Met alot of shipmates during my 27 years of active service. Sorry but the grey matter isn't helping me remember to many of my past shipmates. If any of you remember me - please send me a Email. But the second best was being at the initiation of one of the young men that I enlisted into the Navy back in 1983. I was proud to be apart of that Initiation in 1999, at the Ingelside Naval Station, and the reading of the creed aboard The USS CHIEF. I am lucky enough to be still working with a couple of retired chiefs, one who I served with on my first cruise in 1964 aboard USS Midway. Being a Chief is still important to me!
