retired out of Pax River Md after doing 30 years and 23 days...what I considered to be highlights were: serving onboard USS Forrestal, CVA 59 in Tonkin Gulf JUly 1967...Plank owner USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CVN 69(I still like IKE), first president of the first **REAL** class at the Senior Enlisted Academy...Newport RI, and I was honored to read the CPO creed at 14 CPO initiations...(those words still get me choked if I'm not careful) plus tours with Naval Secuirty Group in DC and Bremerhaven Germany, Guam, Andrews AFB, Suitland Md, Pearl Harbor Hawaii, Sherman field, Pensacola...decommissioning at Ellyson Field, Bay St Louis Miss. had an easy ride as a weather guesser...easier than many of my hard core, seagoing shipmates, but I never back-uped to a pay line...raised six good kids and a couple dogs, moved 16 times during our cruise and am thankful for a good wife who put up with a lot of crap in the name of dedicated service ... I enjoy meeting, hearing from ol shipmates...I'm a non-active member of several veteran groups//associations, trying to become a respectable golfer again in my retired life in addition to being an ace gardener...it tickled to read one comment from the chief who said Jimmy Carter drove him out. I recall Pres Carter being so concerned about double-dipping...I became a triple-dipper, like many others I know... when social security kicked recently...Too many shipmates were "driven" out by Admiral Zumwalt back in the 60s-70s, but the Navy survived like it always has and always will...I wish we could somehow help out CNO and the boys in DC with these current problems that seem to be the same ol record we have heard playing many times in the past 30-40 years...

Figured you old goats could use a chuckle. I was an AO1 in HA(L)-3, RVN when I made w-1. As is the "thought" e-6 to W-1 includes a CPO hat. 7/1/71 a.m. I was sworn in as a Warrant Officer, that afternoon I was initiated as a CPO - the judge was my Division CPO, AOC Spike Payne. At knife and fork school a YN2 handed out CPO promotion paperwork to my classmates, when he finished he asked if there any questions - I raised my hand - the yeoman looked and said "You must be WO Doran, you didn't have time in grade to make Chief, try again in January." January 16, 1972 I had the time in grade and received my permanent appointment to AOC, but as a new Chief I had to be initiated!!! OK, I did it twice. By the way, I was G-1 DivOff in USS Constellation and the judge was my Division CPO - Yep, AOC Spike Payne. The first initiation was more fun!!! IYAOYAS! (if you don't know what that means, just ask a rated AOC!)

Greetings Shipmates.Enlisted June,1948, went to Boot Camp at Great Lakes, Company 220., then to "P" School at NATTC, Memphis, TN. In January 1949 began 6 months of Aviation Photographer's Mate A School at NATTU, NAS Pensacola, FL. After graduation transferred to Composite Squadron Four (VC-4) at NAS Atlantic City, NJ and TAD to the NAS Photo Lab.Went on 3 detachments aboard USS Siboney, CVE-112, USS Saipan, CVL-48, and USS Bennington, CVA-20. Transferred to Photo Lab at NAS Memphis, TN and in2 months to the Photo Lab at NAS Glenview, Il.In September, 1956 received orders to Air Development Squadron Six (VX-6) at NAS Quonset Pt. RI. for duty on Operation Deep Freeze II. Made 5 deployments to Antarctica, Deep freeze II through DF-61 As Aerial Mapping Photographer on R5D, P2V-7 Ski, and R7V. Received orders to the NAS Norfolk, VA Photo Lab in September, 1961 for a 3 year tour. Notified by ther U.S. Geographical Board of Names that mountains in Antarctica were named after me and plane crew members for discovering a new Mountain Range in 1959. In 1964 joined the pre-commissioning crew of USS America, CVA-66 remaining aboard till 1966 when ordered back to VX-6 and made 2 more deployments to Antarctica. Promoted to WO1 in June, 1968 and to CWO2 in June, 1970. Assigned to the Photo SDchools Command (NATTU), NAS Pensacola, FL.for a 3 year tour as a Divison Officer. In 1971 transferred to RVAH-13 at NAS Albany, GA. and deployed aboard USS Enterprise, CVN-65 as Photo Recon. Officer in August, 1972 Returning in June, 1973, got orders tin September 73 to the Atlantic Fleet Photographic Center, NAS Norfolk, VA as acting Executive Officer. Retired after 26 years on 30 September, 1974 reverted back to PHCM. Taught NJROTC for 15 years, retiring in 1989.

Hello there fellow Chiefs. I am Howard Davis and am currently stationed at HC-5 at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. And now that my eyes have been opened, I am soooo thankful that I didn't join the Air Force. A little of my back ground. I enlisted and went to boot camp in December 1978. I then went to various schools for "A" school, aircrew, and SAR. My first command was HC-11 and cruised with Det 2 most of my time there with a short one with Det 5. My first cruise was on the Mount Hood AE-29 where on 28 June 1981, I was duely initiated into the order of the relm of Neptunus Rex. In 1983 I transfered and spent 3 years at Navy Fighter Weapons School (Topgun) at NAS Miramar. I then returned to sea duty onboard USS Tarawa LHA-1 till 1989. Onboard, I was assigned to the Helo crew of Eagle One as a Search and Rescue Crewchief. In 1989 I left the Tarawa and reported to HC-3 as a CH-46 Aircrew instructor and division LPO. After 2 years, I said I had enough, teminated and reported to PCD Essex LHD-2. My time there was very brief as the Navy decided to remove the organic Helos from the Gators. So I decided to do an East coast tour with HC-6. While there I did 2 Med cruises and several Carribean trips in support of the Haiti operation. Then I put on my ancors and transfered to NAS Meridian to fly with the Station SAR unit. It was there I learned that the Chief is absolutely the jack of all trades, as I was one. Then just in January of this year, I reported to HC-5 where I am the Quality Assurance Division Chief. If anyone has been in the same place I have been, past or present, let me know. I would love to hear from you. Well, I'm off like a dirty shirt. By the way, this is a great page. absolutely love it.

Enlisted June 1948,went to Boot Camp at Great Lakes, then to "P" School at NATTC Memphis, TN. January, 1949 started 6 months of "AF" Aviation Photographer's Mate A School at NATTU, Pensacola, FL. After graduation transferred to V-4 (Composite Squadron Four) at NAS Atlantic City, NJ. Went on 3 detachment cruises on USS Siboney, CVE-112; USS Saipan, CVL-48; and USS Bennington, CVA-20. TAD to NAS Photo Lab. Transferred in 1954 to NAS Memphis, TN and onto NAS Glenview, IL. Received orders to VX-6 (Air Development Squadron Six) for duty on Operation Deep Freeze II. Sept. 1956. Made 5 deployments Deep Freeze II through DF-61 to Antarctica as Aerial Mapping Photographer on R5D and P2V-7 aircraft. Transferred to NAS Norfolk Photo Lab in 1961 for 3-year tour. Notified in 1961 that mountains in Antarctica was named after me and plane crewmembers for discovering new mountain range in Antarctica. 1964 joined USS America CVA-66 Pre-Com crew and stayed aboard till 1966, ordered back to VX-6 and did two more tours in Antarctica. Promoted to WO1 in June 1968 and to CWO2 in June 1970. Assigned to the Photo Schools (NATTU) at NAS Pensacola, FL. For 3year tour as Training Division Officer. In 1971 went to RVAH-13 at NAS Albany, GA. Deployed on USS Enterprise, CVN-65 as Photo Recon , returning in June,1973.Transerred to Atlantic Photographic Center, NAS Norfolk, October,1973 as Acting Executive officer. Retired after 26 years on 30 Sept. 1974 reverted back to PHCM. Taught NJROTC for 15 years, retiring in 1989. Great Web page, GO NAVY.
