Name: HMC(SW/AW/FMF) Patrick A. Jensen, USN, Ret. Comments: Recently transfered to the Fleet Reserve 10/1/98. History of service, 1976 Co. 149 RTC Orlando, Fl. Went to USS LaSalle(AGF-3) 1976-77 homported in Bahrain. Transfered to USS Carpenter(DD-825) 1977-79 advanced to BM3 and figured that was not what I wanted to do the rest of my Navy life so I went to the Active Reserves and requested HM "A" school, finally got that in Jan 81. Went to NavHosp Newport, RI next until 1983. Then to 2D MarDiv, first taste of the green side. Yum! Yum! GIVE ME MORE!!! Did the Beruit thing, moment of silence please, left there an HM2. Went to NavHosp Charleston, SC until 12/89 and transfered to IDC school. Went to USS Inchon(LPH-12) 1990-93, NavHosp Beaufort, SC (YUCK! Worst duty station in my career, not because of area but because of command). USS Klakring(FFG-42) then to MCAS Beaufort until my retirment. Even during the bad times I enjoyed every minute of my Navy life, you guys and gals don't know how good you have it until you get out. I miss it real bad. I went to get ID cards for my kids the other day and the 1st Class taking care of us called me Chief and I hadn't heard that in a while and my chest puffed out and I felt that "feeling" again. Thanks for letting me vent, but then, what is the CPO Mess for? Once a Chief, always a Chief. Keep charging hard and remember, that little Seaman in your charge could one day be a Chief. Teach them right. |

I am one of the "old" WW 2 chiefs. Believe it or not, we're tough and hanging in there. Duties, 1941 to 1962, WW2 years served on various foreign and US Merchant Marine transports, charter transport pool attached to ARMED GUARD. One foreign in particular HMS Klipfontaine, a pre-war Dutch luxary liner. Also, 2 tours of recruiting duty, Los Angeles area. Destroyers, tankers, atack transports and fleet tugs. My last sea duty prior to retirement was the Bryce Canyon, Destroyer Tender. Any you "old" WW2 chiefs out there, would like to hear from you. Scuttle butt, and spin a few war stories. |

Name: MTC(SS) Larry Whitaker Comments: Thank you for the CPO webpage. I took the liberty of passing it on to a retired CPO who loves it. I was on the Vallejo Gold Crew commissioning crew (original) with Jack Nunnelley as Captain. From there I was commissioned and retired from my last duty station at Lockheed 22 years ago. I then did 20 years as a Lockheed employee and am now fully retired. Of all my days in the Navy, the day I made "THE HAT" stands as my greatest. As you well know, a new Seaman sees the Chief and is sort of awed. At least I was. Looking toward the day of becoming a CPO was a long and bumpy road but putting on "THE HAT" and serving as "THE CHIEF" was very rewarding. I look forward to going through the WEBSITE and re-living good times. Thank you again |
