Even though I am a reserve I was initiated with the active duty initiates. Even as a reserve I am still considered "The Chief" and with the downsizing of both the active and reserve forces, I feel that the role of the chief is more important than ever.I am sure that I will be using this site to help me in my duties as a chief and also pointing any of my first-classes who make chief here to help them to learn what it means to be a "Chief".

Comments: I joined the US Navy September 6, 1955. Went to boots at Bainbridge, Md, Co 447. Next went to AN "P" School at Norman , OK in December, 1955 as class 55-50. I then went on to AM "A" School at Memphis, TN class 56-09. Next was my first taste of the real Navy when I was attached to the Auxiliary Air Station Corry Field, Pensacola, FL. I stayed there until the fall of 1957 and then was transferred to VP-8 at Quonset Point, RI. While there we were deployed to Argentia, NFLD. Upon our return our Homeport had been changed to Chincoteague, Va. A few months later in the spring of 1959 we were once more re-homeported to Breezy Point, Norfolk, Va. Spring of 1960 saw me attached to VF-174, located at Cecil Field, Jacksonville, FL. Summer of 1963, a few months after the Cuban Missile Crisis, I received orders to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. (Gitmo to those that were there) I was attached to VU-10 which was redesignated VC-10 while I was attached. Late fall of 1966 and I was on my way to VT-9 at Meridian, Miss. While attached there I was the Maintenance Chief and had became a Senior Chief. Upon leaving there in January of 1970 I went on to Lemoore, Ca attached to VA-25 where I accepted a discharge after 15 years. I still have many fond memories of those years and would love to correspond with anyone that wants to.

Comments: Actually, I found you through the squib in the NCPOA Newsletter that came yesterday. I was initiated a Boilerman Chief Petty Officer on Jan 15, 1974 at the CPO Mess, Naval Construction Battalion Center, Port Hueneme, Calif, all by myself, by the Seabee Chiefs of Naval Construction Training Center. The CO, Cdr Filbry, a CPO in his own right, said it was the grossest thing that he ever saw (with a big grin). After all, Fleet Tincan BTs have a reputation to uphold. :-P~~~~~

Certainly I felt most proud wearing my CPO dress canvas with the four gold hashmarks. I kept that one; the other stuff is now gone except for the officer's sword (a gift from COMNAVHOMEPAC in 1983). I am certainly glad I'm gone now. Dinos like me have no place in today's PC Navy. Have a Great Navy Day... Locke

Comments: I am a Personnelman Master Chief Petty Officer, Surface Warfare (PNCM(SW)). I think it is great that someone has taken the time to set up a page where we can go and maybe find some long time shipmates or even meet new ones. I have been on Active duty for almost 28 years and will be going to the Fleet Reserve on 31 January 1999. This will give me a total of 28 yrs 4 mos 22 days but who is counting. The ships I have served on: USS HITCHITI (ATF 103), USS GRAY (FF 1054) and USS FANNING (FF 1076). Their all gone now just like me (soon to go). But one thing I must say, the Navy has been a great place to spend most of my adult life. If I had it to do over again, I would not change one darn thing.
