Comments: When I was stationed with CCDG-5, RADM Peter A.C. Long, had supper with the Chief’s mess on the USS Kitty Hawk CV-63. Kitty Hawk was CCDG-5 flagship. He made a comment that I think is more prevalent now than it was when he made it. This was back in 1997. He stated that he was worried that the knowledge and leadership of the senior members wasn’t getting passed on to the recently initiated Chiefs. He gave a number of 5 percent of the knowledge wasn’t getting passed on. Then he asked the question, if this is the case, how effective will the Chief’s mess be 20 years from now? He then urged everyone to share knowledge/experience/thoughts/ideas/etc. He then used the (what is said in the Chief’s mess, stays in the mess) and to ensure we do just that. Duty Stations: Top of the all my buddies in the goat locker. I served from 10 NOV 63 to 30 NOV 88. Today I still wished that I had stayed until I was forced to retire. Serviced on an old ship THE USS ORISKANY CVA 34. The MIGHT O. THE O BOAT. Then after the fire that killed 44 men. She was referred to as USS ZIPO LIGHT FIRST TIME ALL the time. I was involved in fighting the fire at Repair locker locker 4. That was where the fire was involved.
Later I was honored with a NAVY COMMENDATION WITH V (for heroism). I was only 19 year old. So I say to remember all CHIEFS from the passed, all the CHIEFS of the present, and all the bottom feeders please teach them how to be THE CHIEF. Now remember ONCE A CHIEF ALWAYS A CHIEF. Keep up the good work and don't lose training program for without it then they wear first class crow then walk in with a anchor the next. NO THANK YOU. I had better close.
