Comments: I have been retired for 35 years (last July). I have a lot of memories-good and bad. My claim to fame (for me) is: I started getting E-7 pay on September 1973, and I started getting E-8 pay on September 1975. That's only two years, but time as an E-7 is three-how did I do this? I took the Chief's test in August 1972, passed and advanced to CPO, however the Navy did not have the money to pay for the new CPO's so they frocked all the new Chief's in April 1973. Therefore my time in grade as a CPO went back to August 1972. I spent a long time as an E-6 (first class) and fully expected to retire as a First Class Petty Officer. Looking back my time in the US Navy was very exciting, but I didn't think so at the time. I was in Key West, FL, Norfolk, VA, Rota, Spain, Guam, USA, New London. CT, Kings Bay, GA, and Charleston, SC

When I made Master Chief in 1995 I found myself in a position to lead the best maintainers in the Navy as the Maintenance Master Chief of VQ-3. Helping Sailors was the best job of my career and that's what I miss the most in my retirement years.
