Comments: Just kind of poking around to see other "Real Chiefs" comments on the loss of the CPO Initiation. That's not the only thing that's been lost over the years. Consider that I was part of the era that had CPO clubs at every Naval Station. The whole inspiration of the Chiefs use to be an exclusive fraternity. Long ago that fraternity was slowly rescinded because of people who just didn’t get it. Enlisted and Officer communities alike. Unfortunately those people had the ability to eradicate respect and tradition from CPO community. It took decades, but they succeeded in a significant ill-advised bone headed maneuver with out enough consideration of the final result. There are a lot of shipmates rolling in their graves that stood up for CPO Mess of the past. Are the people who participated in making this judgment actually swollen with pride? They should be embarrassed for the demolition of the sacred CPO union. What’s next? The removal of the Chiefs Mess from ships?

Comments: I Retired 2006, seems our Navy has rapidly changed, only hope for the best. I Read an article in the Navy Times a few weeks ago that the MCPON is doing away with Chief's indoctrination "initiation". I can say I learned so much during my initiation, many valuable lessons in trust, time management, taking care of our Navy, and leadership etc... I am proud to be a Chief. The MCPON is in Washington DC he must not have Chief's around him only politicians.

Comments: I think I signed in a few years ago, but haven't visited in a while. I joined the Navy in 1957, and retired at the end of 1984. In THOSE days, the Chiefs really DID run the Navy.....and ran it well. In those days, there was a CPO club at every wide spot in the road, and a lot of good business was transacted there as well as a bit of revelry. Our Navy is strong, modern, and capable, but I worry about the manning when Chiefs have been relegated to nothing but highly educated and higher paid enlisted personnel.

Started Navy in 1973, went to advanced electronics training, AX. VP-49, NAS JAX, Area 7 recruiting duty (all rates were merged and I was designated as an AT), USS Nassau LHA-4, NAMTRA Norfolk, and HC-6, Det 4 CPOIC. I retired in 1992 after 24 years.

Comments: Only a year into retirement and a new MCPON is going to change "AGAIN" a long lasting tradition that prepares FCPOs to become quality CPOs. I never expected to learn everything about being a CPO during, transition, induction, etc. But what I did learn was the value of a brotherhood that had the best resources around. You can't beat experience and wisdom from the CPOs of the past. I thought First Classes earned the right to becoming a CPO by one, being the best of the best (impeccable service record), two, evaluations that made them stand out of a crowd (high rankings, EP, etc) and three, the longevity of being in service. What is happening to my Navy? What is happening to my brotheren CPOs. The MCPON should listen to "ALL" his CPOs, including the retired ones. Or was the old saying, "Once a Chief, Always a Chief" just a cliche!
