The Goat Locker CPO Deck Log Apr-June 2007
CPO email addresses are available by clicking on the CPO's name. I also have a separate listing of just CPO email addresses available. Please note that all email addresses worked when placed on this page. Overtime some may not work due to Chiefs changing their Internet providers. You can save the file and use your browser to view it off line or you can view it with any word processor. Use your browsers "find" or "search" command and search for shipmates by rate, name or command. To even further keep entries secure from SPAM I have added a "2" after every @ symbol in each email address. So if you go to email someone remove the "2" from the address.

Comments: CTRC(ret) Richard A Shaw, my loving devoted father andmentor, died June 23, 2007. Rick Shaw is my fraternal brother in the CPO mess and the anchors I wore were his while he served our nation for 26 yrs/07 mos/05 days to be exact - my father always said if you're going to do it, do it to get it right the first time! My Poploved to do it all - serve on precom unit Yorktown CG-48,commissioning crewUSS Yorktown CG-48, and challenged "the line of death" (as many times as Gaddafi moved it!) My shipmate was the epitome of all core values and instilled his 'ease of the gab' with all who were "graced by this chiefs' presence" (almost a direct quote). He was the first to be initiated bychoice in our family (ONLY due tothe virtue of his "vintage-ness") and was proud of tradition as he guided this "landlubbing Seabee" during her Hell Night. Navy First, Troops Always. Daddy, you stand relieved...I have the watch.

Comments: Greetings fellow Chiefs. I have been out of the proverbial loop for awhile and felt compelled to find my way back to the family I've known and loved for over 30 years. That is my NAVY family and the Chiefs, officers and White Hats that made it that way. I send my best wishes to those of you who are still serving - may you stay strong and vigilent. For my fellow retirees, thanks for keeping the network open and receptive. I don't know how I could have made it without you - and you do know who you are. And to all the officers that I have worked with that mentored me, chewed my tail, and stood by me when times were real tough, Thanks - you are the best.

He was my facilitator while going through my Chiefs training. That goes without saying for ALL of the Chiefs that I served under, CMC Schwalbendorf, one of my best friends. Since retiring in Feb 2006, I've had many days when I miss all of it, the guys, the challenges. I walked away from the Navy knowing that I am part of greatest fraternity! thanks to all that pushed me to where I am.

Comments: Loved the tour on the PT boats, great Navy. Enjoyed serving on every ship assigned to, think the Mahan was by far the best ship, being a man of war and equipped with the most up to date offense and defense systems available at that time. Wound up my career serving in the Defense Communication Agency Spain Italy Africa, stationed at Torrejon AFB Madrid Spain, outstanding people and many interesting places to visit. Last stationed with Defense Communications Agency Europe at Camp De Loge Paris France, civilians not as friendly as the Spaniards but again great places to visit, the family and I got to do it all together, don't think we missed very many things. Best choice I ever made, loved the NAVAL SERVICE. God Bless all that have served and especially those serving today, stay safe.

Comments: I RETIRED IN 1966. I am now a member of THE FLORIDA CHIEF PETTY OFFICERS ASSN. We have almost 400 members. I am trying to get the word out to everyone. We have two great get togethers a year, always in FLORIDA. Hopefully convenient to all. I miss the Navy and these meetings HELP me relive the great times. Always well planned, we have many outside activities. Sometime we visit an active duty ship. If none are available where we are, we may have a River Cruise or a visit to a fine city. Spouses are invited. They often have more FUN then the Chief. I enjoy most, the time spent in the Hospitality Room, where we have refreshments an much comraderie. Old times and old tales are great for the soul. I am always saddened when it is time to leave. If interested, please contact me at mchief1@juno.com.The only requirements to join are, you must have been a Chief for at least one day in the USN or USCG. We have officers that were Chiefs at one time. Dues are $10 a year. We have a great News letter four times a year.If you don't live in FLORIDA but know a Chief that does, do him a favor. Tell him of our organization. He will thank you for it. Fair Winds, Shipmates, Bob

Comments: After recruit training in San Diego (Aug '75) a year of schools, I spent 3 years aboard USS RANGER CV-61 working in Radio, TAD to the ship's MAA's Ship's Criminal Investigations. Then I went back to Boot Camp San Diego as a Company Commander, where I converted from RM2 to MA1 all in ONE test (you can't do that anymore). I finally ended up at Subase San Diego's Security Department until I left the Navy to work with the local Police Department. After several yearsI joined the Naval Reserves as an MA1, serving in several Units from California to Colorado, including USS Warden, AMCC5, NAF Atsugi, LEPSU 0188, and finally the OKINAWA Unit which I retired out of. After about a year ofcivilian life (excpet for keeping active in my Chiefs' Mess in Denver), I found myself in Baghdad, Iraq, where I am now working as an Army Contractor Locksmith supporting our Troops from all branches, and the U.S. State Department. There is a good Chiefs' Mess here, and they were quick to welcome this Retired Chief, which makes this place a lot easier to deal with. So, if you are in the Baghdad area, near the Palace, look me up.

Comments: While I retired as CWO2 4/1/1985. I always think back to those days where friendship AND camaraderie meant something. I still keep in touch with those good old shipmates. I want to pass on this story if i might. We were at sea and oneevening the Capt (W.C. HAMM - USS DALE DLG 19) gave me a tasking that would sink a battleship, AND, it had to be done by 1300 the next day. I walked into the CPO Mess to get a cup of coffee before starting on this task. I was loaded with paperwork and a frown on my face. When I entered there where 15 other CPO's in there. One of them asked "Why so down Mac" and I told him. It wasn't 10 seconds later ALL of the CPO's in there, and some more that came in later, took sections of the work and started asking questions on what to do. I kid you not. We finished at 0615 the next morning. Some Chiefs went on watch some new ones came in. The word was out. Even the mess people helped during the night making sure we had plenty of whatever. At 1300 I went to the wardroom where the meeting was held. You should have seen the look on all the officers faces when I said it was done. There faces where even more surprised when I said "Compliments of the CPO Mess." Years later when I became a Warrant Officer I realized why they had surprised faces. Officers COMPETE with each other. CPO's work with each other. Thanks Shipmates

Comments: I retired in 1999. One of my favorite sea stories: 1985, out to sea on the Shenandoah, to ride the storm out re: Hurricane Gloria, and this bonehead named Hurly, snuck an inflatable dingy on board. Hid it in a cable room space. After the ship had gotten ever-so-slightly out to sea, armed with his dingy, Hurly jumped ship. N0 one noticed until muster the next morning that he was missing. During his 'escape' he somehow lost the oars. Another ship - maybe a coast guard vessel? can't remember... rescues him - thinking he is perhaps a civilian (he wore his civvies and no i.d.). They bring him to shore, to a police station. The police somehow figure he is not telling the truth, they call the shore patrol. Hurly gets busted. The HM's on the Shenandoah wrote a funny tribute to the event called "the Hurly Hall of Fame". It went somthing like this (a hillbilly kind of ballad) "Ooooh, I'd like to be a member of the Hurly Hall of Fame.. he did somethin' special and I'd like to do the same.A real Benedict Arnold, a traitor just like him.... " and so on.
Hurly was a piece of work, a real sh*tbird. It was bizarre and hilarious.

Comments: I retired in 1995 after 28 1/2 years of service. I currently work for Texas Veterans Commission at the VA Hospital in Dallas. I am requesting information and guidance in order to help a veteran who served aboard USS Oklahoma City 1965-1968. He is currently diagnosed with Diabetes and two forms of cancer as a result to exposure to Agent Orange. His claims have been previously denied because the Veterans Administration has been unable to substantiate a port visit to DaNang, South Viet Nam in approximately--June 1966---and the veterans presence onboard. I have previously located other ships logs for other veterans seeking to substantiate their claims, but have thus far been unable to find an on-line capability for USS Oklahoma City's Deck and Muster Logs for this period. Can you lend a hand. I am willing to pay for this information, provided it does not prove prohibitive. Jim Pearston, HMC USN ret

Comments: I was an AZC stationed in "Gitmo" in 79 and coached a little league called the "Pirates". On this team was a pitching combination of two girls. Trying to find my passport the other day I ran across an article in the "Guantanamo Gazette" about these two young girls and I was wondering if any Chief out there might know anything about them. Sally, was the daughter of Gunner's Mate Senior Chief Richard Davis and Susan, was the daughter of Mess Specialist First Class Nestor Collocar. What a combination these two were and oh how the boys were bewildered when they saw this combination. Thanks for the Goat Locker. LCDR/AZC R.E. Davis

Not a big deal, but I'm curious. Liberty for the brave! Al

For several reasons I dropped out and for the past year or so I have wanted to get back...I helped Greg with the plankowner certificate and some of you may recall that I was the first CMC of the goatlocker...something I still consider a rare and great honor !! Got a call last night from an olde shipmate from Kansas who was on his way to a gathering of goats in Jacksonville...I kinda wished I was on my way there as well... maybe next time ?? Anyhow I hope all of you are having a fine Navy day... sincerely, Fred Baillie, Dancing Bear, etc etc

I didn't include ALL duty stations, just the ones that floated to the top of my memory at the time. I wish all of my fellow Chief's well. God Bless. Ken Smith (Chiefyeo)
