I retired in February 1980 and went to work for RCA Service Company and retired from Lockheed Martin in September 2005. Currently reside in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Comments: I enlisted in the Navy in August 1941 and was assigned to the battleship, USS Idaho, I spent WWII in the hot engine rooms as we bombarded the islands in the Pacific, from the Aleut ions, to the Solomon Islands, Guam, Saipan, Tarawa, Iwo Jima,and Okinawa. In 1947 I was assigned to the USS Philippine Sea and ran the Refrigeration and AC Gang for 6 years. We wereone of the first ships to getin the Korean War. In 1952 I was promoted to Chief Machinist's Mate and transferred to NTC. San Diego, CA to push boots. In September 1955 I was assigned to the USS Kearsage-CV33. In January 1957 I swapped with another Chief for the USS Wasp-CVS-18 and rod the Wasp around the horn to our new home port in Boston, MA. In October 1958 I got orders to go to the USS Independence-CV62. The Independence was a new super carrier being built in Brooklyn Navy Yard. I was the Chief in Charge of No 4 Main Machinery Room. In 1960 I went to the Navy Recruiting Station, Springfield, Ohio and was promoted to Senior Chief a short time later. In 1963 I was transfer ed to the USS Robert L. Wilson (DD-847) at Philadelphia, PA where she was undergoing a FRAM upgrade. In February 1964 I retired and became the Assistant Chief Engineer of Princeton University. After retiring I also worked as the Chief Engineer of Horn Hardart Baking Company Phila, PA, The Plant Eng inner of Hill Refrigeration, Trenton, NJ and the RCA Maintenance Superintendent in Alaska at many of the remote Radar Stations before the end of the cold war. I now live in Lutz, Florida and belong to the Florida Chief Petty Officers Association, FRA branch 179, and am a life member of the DAV and VFW.

I am certain that I'm a better man due to my service; I can't imagine how I would have turned out if I never served. What I do know is the Navy gave me many challenges and responsibilities that I would never have had otherwise; I always knew that I could rely on my fellow Chief's if I needed any assistance. Thanks to all of you who helped me along the way. My best day in the Navy will always be September 16, 1991. To the next generation of Chief's my advice is; really know what's going on with your Sailors; challenge them; look out for them; point them in the right direction. Comments: It is with great sadness that I report the passing of a unique CPO. Michael F. Farantino, EMC, USNR (ret.). Mike was a WW2 vet and survivor of the sinking of USS Princeton (CVL-23), the Pacific typhoon of 1944 (serving on board USS Brown, DD-546), a plankowner on USS Coral Sea (CV-43), a recruiter at NRD NJ in the late 1970's while a TEMAC(actually he was my Navy recruiter)and various reserve units after leaving active duty. He was a great friend and shipmate to all who knew him. He was proud of being a Chief Petty Officer and dearly loved our Navy. He will be missed.

Comments: I have been retired about 1.5 years. I have found out that civilians are damn hard to get used to, sometimes, even harder to like. There are many days that I would give just about anything to put those anchors back on. I remember many, many proud and happy days that are rekindled by a box of photographs. I also remember with equal claritythe very sad and somber times remembering shipmates that you saw in the morning and they were gone forever by days end. As a great poet/songwriter once said "some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way"
