Joined the crew of the USS Lexington, CVS-16, Pensacola, Flordia NAS, October, 1967. Spent a year in Main Control "M" divison. When we went to the Boston Navy Ship Yard for dry-dock I was transfered to "R" divison. Had a great time execept for the daily "sponge and bucket" detail. Left the Navy January 1969. Crew members will remember the time the "LEX" almost got stuck in Mobile, Alabama Bay. They will also remember the "bilge fire" in the Boston Ship Yard. What an event! I remember crawling around the ship with others wearing gas masks that were not the best. I remember the night flights and the landing "screeches" while I tried to sleep. My compartment was over the hanger bay, aft end. A few of us, on night flight cruises, sneaked to the unused officers quarters for for a good nights sleep! I would be happy to hear from anybody that served on the Lady Lex. If you are a "ham radio operator" you can find me on 3910 Mhz most evenings. Just call for W9FPJ.

This is/was where the Naval Advancement Exams were written and the pass/fail and advancement notices were issued before moving to Florida. Worked with many fine officers and chiefs while in the Navy. Those who called for notices probably went throught the Quarterdeck and spoke with me or some of the chiefs, before being transferred to Records for results. 3 WAVES made 1st Increment on the YN3 exam in 1973 from this command. Does anyone know what the active duty recall percentage for Master-at-Arms was pre 9/11? For example, did the last recall occur in Desert Storm, then no recall's until 9/11 occurred? Even though we hear that MA's get recalled more often than other rates, might not this be true simply because we have had recent conflicts i.e. - 9/11, Afghanistan, and Iraq in the past two (2) years? Someday I can only hope to be a Chief Petty Officer. Ever since I made First Class I have always wanted to be one step ahead. Being a CPO is a personal and professional goal of mine before I retire. I go up for it my first time in Jan 04. With good study habits, pass the test, and become board eligable, I hope they can consider me as being worth while and a valuable asset to wear the uniform of a CPO. A proud tradition and an organization worth the effort. My previous Commands include USS Boone FFG-28 (Sep90-Oct93), USS Oldendorf DD-972 (Oct94-Nov97), USS Howard DDG-83 (Nov00-present). I have been in for 14 years as a Gunnersmate in this great Navy of ours serving proudly. I write this email to not only give a little about my background but to gain and give alot to the ranks of a Chief Petty Officer of the United States Navy.

First, my compliments to you youngun's that have been selected for Chief Petty Officer...Believe me, you have a long way to go and a lot to learn, in a very short time...Make the most of your training and your "Journey"...Also, might I suggest that you find your way to the Plank Owner's page and beome a Plank Owner of this fine Mess...Any amount that you can put up will be gratefully accepted by MMCM(SS) Peterman so that he can keep this wonderful Mess on line...BTW, there is a contest on the main BBS that has unofficially challenged the Mess to submit up to $50.00 each, at the rate of $2.50 for each of you newbies that pledge to become Plank Owners, actually make Chief and fulfill your pledge...You guys have the chance to force the CMC, the Sheriff (me) and others to put our money up...BUT only if you make Chief and fulfill your pledge...Count is being kept on the main BBS, so make your pledge there...Again, congratulations to you all...HAVFND...John

Helped commission he USS Cahaba AO82 January 1944. Served WW2 aboard until February 1946. While aboard the Cahaba received one silver star and three bronze stars. Our doctor was a good photographer and I have lots of pictures from his negatives. Ship's history given to each member of the crew by our Captain, Cmdr. Julius Burnbaum. Will share.
