I hoping to ride again after this RDC duty. It's amazing how proud I am to show off the fact that I am a small piece of the world's finest group of sailors!

Comments: Good morning/afternoon/evening: Today, I am actually surfing the internet to prepare me for the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Sailor of the Year board. I am grateful of the opportunity that the NAVY has given me. After only being in the NAVY for a short 7 years, it has greatly humbled me to where I am now. I have won 6 Sailor of the Year boards. Of them are: 1st Dental Battalion, JSOY, CY-99; Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, AZ, Sailor of the Year, CY-99; 1st Service Support Group, JSOY, CY-99; 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, JSOY, CY-99; Naval School of Health Sciences, Detachment Sheppard Air Force Base, SSOY, CY-01; Naval School of Health Sciences, Sailor of the Year, CY-01. I am appreciative of the mentorship of the CHIEF Community and this a lasting impression that I will never forget. Comments: SIR I HAVE KNOCKED 3 TIMES AND REMOVED MY COVER REQUEST PERMISSION TO COME ENTER, AND COME ABOARD. A LITTLE HISTORY: ENTERED USMCR( 15TH RIFLE CO. 1ST MARINE DIVISION ON JULY 11TH 1954, TRANSFERED TO US ACTIVE NAVY, AND BOOT CAMP SEPTEMBER 1954, SORRY I DO NOT REMEMBER THE CO #. UPON GRADUATION I WAS ORDERED TO THE USS PIEDMONT AD17 FOR OJT IN SIGNALMAN/QUARTERMASTER RATES. MADE 1ST WESTPAC CRUISE ON THE PIEDMONT. SUFFERED THROUGH 2 TYPHOONS THAT CRUISE. SPENT ALOT OF TIME IN SASEBO, AND YOKOSUKA, AND SUBIC BAY. UPON RETURN TO SAN DIEGO WE WERE IMMEDIATLY SENT TO BREMERTON WA. FOR YARD PERIOD. AS SOON AS RETURNED TO DEIGO I WAS TRANSFERED TO THE USS ST. PAUL CA73 JUST B-4 SHE LEFT FOR WESTPAC CRUISE. ST. PAUL CA73 WAS AN OFFICIAL U.S. REPRESENTATIVE WHILE @ SUBIC BAY, AND WENT TO MANILA FOR THE FUNERAL SERVICES, AND MEMORAL PARADE FOR PRESIDENT RAMON MAGSAYSAY KILLED IN PLANE CRASH. MORE NASTY FOUL WEATHER. THIS WAS MORE THAN A TYPICAL CRUISE AS WE WERE ALSO INVOLVED IN OPERATION BEACON HILL WHILE IN THE PHILLIPINES. UPON RETURN TO LONG BEACH CA. I WAS GIVEN ANOTHER DUTY STATION, THE USS RUPERTUS DD851. SHE WAS IN DRYDOCK AT THE TIME AND COMPLETING THE WORK. BEFORE I COULD TURN AROUND WE WERE OFF ACROSS THE EQUATOR TO BRISBANE, THEN ON TO OUR FAVORITE WESTPAC PORTS OF CALL, AND 2 MORE NASTY STORMS. SEEMS WE SPEND AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF TIME ON NORTHEREN/SOUTHERN FORMOSAN PATROL, ANLONG WITH KAOSHSUNG, KEELUNG. I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF MY ENLISTMENT, AND THE RELATIONSHIPS I HAD WITH SO MANY MATES. I THINK OFTERN OF THEM, SEEMS I CAN SEE FACES BUT HAVE FORGOTTEN MANY NAMES. WITH ALL MY HEART WISH I COULD ONCE AGAIN FEEL THE DECK BENEATH MY FEET, AND HAVE GREEN WATER SPRAY IN MY FACE. I LONG TO GO TO SEA AGAIN. TO SMELL THOSE FOREIGN PLACES. I HAVE LOST BEST MATE FROM THE RUPE NAMED FRED GREATOREX BM3 FM 2ND DIV. HE WAS A VALUED MEMBER OF THE FILTHY SIX, A GROUP OF MATES ABOARD THE RUPE ON THAT SPECIAL CRUISE. SHOULD ANYONEOUT THERE HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON FRED, HIS WIFE, OR SON PLEASE ADVISE. ALSO HOPE THAT SOMEHOW OTHER MATES FROM MY DUTY STATIONS MAY SEE AND RESPOND.

Comments: Fantastic site. Good to see a photo of New Jersey - I visited her while she was in Sydney some years ago. Would love to see a photo of the Durham LKA 114. Visted her in Hongkers in '86. Had a wild old time with some of the medicos. Took me a week to detox after that run.

Former Yorktown Radiomen, a proposed reunion is tentatively being scheduled Sept. 6-12, 2002 (or any dates in between)at Charleston, SC. If you're interested, please contact me at your soonest.

I recently found several old friends from the Hawkbill from Internet sites, but I'm still looking for a Gene Schlegal. Gene is his middle name; don't know his first name, but everybody called him Gene. He was a sonarman on the Pintado commissioning crew. Any ideas? Thanks, Rig-For-Deep Mike.
