Hi everyone! I just wanted to check in, only this time as a retired Chief! I retired on 1 December and I must admit, the first couple of weeks was mentally challenging for me. But...I'm loving every moment of it! The "blue" ID card was an adjustment at first but...I'm fine with it all now! I'm looking for my very first house hope to be settled in before the winter is over! :D If there is anyone out there that knows me, please email me. I also have a discussion forum where my goal is to attract active duty and retired service members. It's a place where we all can engage in small talk, and make cyber friends. Hope you'll drop in!

Recently completed 2mths active service for Commander Naval SpecWar Grp 1 San Diego as their N2/LCPO. What a blast but what an rare opportunity for a reservist to be placed in charge as the LCPO of an active duty command's intel shop. The challenges of working with our YOUNG sailors are many. It reinforces the need for Chiefs to be managers, parents, leaders, and never be short on the concept of "taking care of your people." I spent 90% of my time taking care of personnel issues and making sure the sailors were taken care of, and the remaining 10% making sure the Intel Officer and the Command had production deadlines met. Having several years of personnel management on the civilian side helped. Having a CMC at the command who was available for guidance, and having other chiefs to go to for answers was absolutely what being a chief and being Navy is all about. The biggest challenge for a reserve CPO coming onto active duty with responsibility over USN sailors is understand the active duty personnel system vice the reserve system. The impression I hope the sailors I worked with were left with that even though I am a career reservist, in my mind, there are NO PART TIME CHIEFS IN THE NAVY. Nor should there be. While I certainly respect those who go onto being LDOs, at 45 I prefer the office of "Chief" over the first ladder rung of ensign. I also like the challenge of working with sailors where the rubber meets the road. My only advise to those who aspire to anchors, be careful what you test for, because the anchors will put you to the test! And when they do, your job is about taking care of the sailors, not just being a technical expert in your field. The job does not get done unless you manage the structure. I hope that all of my reserve associates perform well as part of a "One Navy" team. For those you think need a hint, don't be afraid to come up to us and offer it. On the other hand, no reservist should ever think of themselves as anything less than a full partner in a Great Adventure. See you out there!

May I put a link to here from my web site? I have served mainly on Knox Class Firgutes. My first was the USS Moinester (FF-1097) and last USS Bowen (FF-1079) -Dig those hull numbers- I also did Instructor duty at FTC ET School in Norfolk, Va. I worked at SIMA Philadelphia and I served abourd the USS Moosbrugger (DDG-980). I have had the honor of serving aboard the USS Fearless (MSO-442) in the Persian Gulf prior to the War. And I retired in Sept 94. I must say... Carrying on in life as a civilian I have found that I am still the chief! I face every day having to be the fountain of wisdom, the ambassador of good will, the authority in personel relations, etc... I owe it all to the Chiefs who took the time to put me on the right path! BTW It took 6 yrs to find a job that allowed me to persue those traights! But I found it! And I proudly boast the Chiefs Anchor on my office door! Bravo Zulu on this excellent Web Site!

I recently attended the arrival of the LST 325 at the Port of Mobile, AL. The 29 crewmembers are true American heroes. These gallant men repaired and sailed a 58 year-old WWII LST from Souda Bay, Crete to Mobile, Alabama, to be used as a memorial for all LST sailors. What a proud moment for me, to have seen this historic event and meeting some of these patriotic Americans who sailed her home. God bless them, every one, and God bless the United States of America!

My email address give a hint as to my history in the navy. I learned early on in my short career that the Chief is not only the backbone of our beloved navy but the key to any "O" types success regardless of length of tour. Two quick experiences with the Navy Chief define my respect and admiration for the man who has acheived the coveted rank of Chief. I was in basic flight training in Meridian flying the T-2 Buckeye as a new yellow bar. I went out on a solo training flight to practice unusual flight attitudes (we do some of that on purpose...). During the flight there was a hydrolic problem and a it got all over the airplane. Taxing back to the line here comes a khaki clad figure w/a red face and flailing arms. Well, he lit into me about breaking 'his' airplane and not only that getting it dirty... He went up one side of me and liked that so well he went down the same side. All I could get out was "...but sir...but sir...!" He finally finshed his meal on the flight line and stomped off mumbling something about &*^%$#&% ensigns and what they did to his navy. Somewhere in the Taining Command - believe it was in Kingsville shorty before I got my wings - a Chief sat me down and explained the way to a successful career in any Fleet squadron. His advise, and I not only took it to heart but lived by it in every division I was assigned - was that the strongest thread in the blue/gold line is the Navy Chief. Lean on him, seek his council, listen to him and above all act on his advice! That never failed me. The first thing I did when I reported to a new Fleet squadron or even a Division within the squadron was to sit down with the DIvision's Chief (unless the senior man was a First Class) and tell them: "Chief, this is YOUR navy...all I want to do is learn my what I can about how I can stay out of your way of you doing your job, fly and check for light leaks over my bunk." Our Division (mine - on paper..) rarely failed to receive an "E" on ADMATS the whole time I was on active duty. Had absolutely NADA to do with me. I took that attitude with the dental lab folks in my dental practice. I tell them I'll give them a good product to work with but I expect a good product returned. The only time I'm disappointed is when they obviously turn the work over the an Air Farce trained Dental Lab Tech. I know you only wanted my address and phone number... but I just had to express my appreciation for the Navy Chief but in particular the ones I came in contact with and worked. I think this is just great, absolutely terrific. I began my career in 1960 while in highschool went to accelerated Recruit training in Great Lakes, Il. 61-U.S.S.Hammerberg(DE1015)2 weeks trng, then in 1962 reported aboard U.S.S.Courtney(DE1021)..Am looking for BM1, now possibly could be a BMC, or better, Murphy who served aboard the Courtney between 62&64 and was still there when I left. I would appreciate any knowledge of his whereabouts, he was very instrumental in my going for Boatswains Mate and climbing he ladder to BMC. Would like to personally thank him, via E-mail or other. I owed him a great deal. I retired from the U.S.Naval Reserve in January 1990. Glad to be with our community. I still attend initiations here in Syracuse,N.Y.and marvel at the new Chief Selectees and their intelligence and desire to be successful C.P.O.s and do us all proud, dispite the "tailhook" incident. May I wish each and every one of you "Smooth winds and following seas". As it says in "The Chief" newletter/paper put out by the National Chief Petty Officer's Association, "Hail to the Chiefs".

It's been awhile since I've been up and its looking better all the time. Just wish to let some of my fellow chiefs know that I'm still alive and kicking. I'm working for the Kansas Highway Patrol now and have been since 1992, as a Motor Carrier Inspector. I lost my wife Yoshiko on her birthday 12 Dec 1997 and have remarried Betty CLARK, a highschool classmate of mine and we are doing great here in the midwest. We own and operate a small Tobacco Outlet store in Belleville, own two rental homes plus the one we are living in, in Belleville and are remodeling my farmhouse and expect to move into it when finished. Just like to wish all A Very Happy 2001 and many more. Del

This is a great web site. A fellow American Legion member e-mailed it to me today. I have been viewing the site for 3 hours now and better get to bed and view the rest another day. Just food for thought to add to the web site. The American Legion is the largest veterans organization in the world and membership is decreasing daily. As a member of many organizations Fleet Reserve, NRA(Life member), DAV(Life member, VFW(Life member)40/8(Life member), American Legion(Life member), and a few more, the American Legion is always looking for new members. As a past district commander I am always talking to fellow veterans and telling them about the Legion and what they stand for and do for veterans. Other veterans organizations also do this but the more bodies you have the better you are heard. As the Legion is chartered by Congress our National Commander has to give a report to Congress each year. I guess what I am really asking is their any way to add the National Legion homepage as a link to the goatlocker? Is their a message that we can put in the Goatlocker? Comments: I registered in the Destroyer Deck Log sometime ago but I need help with this Technical Nautical question from a landlubber associate. "Every sailing ship had to have cannon for protection. Cannon of the times required round iron cannonballs. The master wanted to store the cannonballs such that they could be of instant use when needed, yet not roll around the gun deck. The solution was to stack them up in a square-based pyramid next to the cannon. The top level of the stack had one ball, the next level down had four, the next had nine, the next had sixteen, and so on. Four levels would provide a stack of 30 cannonballs. The only real problem was how to keep the bottom level from sliding out from under the weight of the higher levels. To do this, they devised a small brass plate ("brass monkey") with one rounded indentation for each cannonball in the bottom layer. Brass was used because the cannonballs wouldn't rust to the "brass monkey" as they would to an iron one. When temperature falls, brass contracts in size faster than iron. So as it got cold on the gun decks, the indentations in the brass monkey would get smaller than the iron cannonballs they were holding. If the temperature got cold enough, the bottom layer would pop out of the indentations, spilling the entire pyramid over the deck. Thus it was, quite literally, "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. Can anyone with real knowledge tell me if this is true or not? It sounds good but is it true???
