It was a great ride starting at now defunct RTC/NTC Orlando, FL, in Feb 69, USS EXPLOIT (MSO 440), CNATRA, NAS, Pensacola, FL, COMNAVSURFLANT 1008, MIUS 1008, NR NAVSTA NORVA, NR FLTHOSP COMMZ, USS ANTRIM FFG-20, NR WPSTA CHASN AND NAVACTS UK. Believe me, because of the people I met over the years, the travel and the work .... I got much more out of the Naval experience that they got out of me. Marine duty stations included Camp Pendleton, Okinawa, Twentynine Palms, CA, and three tours in Vietnam - first with the Marines on ground and last two aboard naval ships.

Finally retired this past 31AUG00 after 22 commands (several reserve units) and I DO miss active duty but it was the time to let the younger kids handle it. I am working at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, OR as a CT Technologist. My QOL is NOT as good as it was on active duty. I also see a need for civilian supervisors to take courses in management and also for them to take courses in QTL/QTM. Last command was as a medical recruiter in Oakland, CA at Navy Recruiting region WEST as the medical Programs Officer for 9 sub echelon Navy Recruiting Districts. As we say, Once a Chief, Always a Chief.

Every now and then I drive to Selfridge ANG Base to keep that military feeling and to take advantage of the exchange/commissary. Active duty served included NMCB4 and NAS Chasefield in Beeville TX. Reserve duty was in RNMCB26, Naval Station Panama, NAF Sigonella, Cargo Handling Det F713, CNAVEUR Det 413, and I retired out of MIUWU 201 in Toledo OH. A poem I wrote riding anchor in the 'Gulf:'Twas the Night Before Christmas out here in the 'Gulf, no talks about Santa, not even his Elf. We knew where we'd be on this Christmas Day, USNS SHUGHART, Haze Gray, underway. No cheering, no kudos, no "strike up the band", just 'Carry on Sailors, & follow the plan'. No one writes to Santa, they figure 'why bother', they keep themselves busy & talk to each other. Of ships that they've sailed on, & places they've been; & holiday dinners, fit for a queen! For Christmas means home, & family or friends, not sitting at anchor where the sea never ends. COMAPSRON FOUR & the Merchant Marine, the LSI crewmen all manning the scene, are keeping the night watch off the coast of Dubai & casting a weather eye up to the sky. Just in case Santa's reindeer should make a wrong turn, they've cleared off the Helo deck, it has been learned. They cleaned up their plates, & tidied their dishes - now who was it said they might get their wishes? For peace & contentment; for joy & good cheer; Merry Christ mas to all & a Happy New Year! My license plate says it all 1998 Dakota is "TOP DOG" and my 1982 Collector Edition Corvette is "EL CID" which translates to The Chief. 2nd Worlds War-Uss John D Henley DD553.Retired in 1962 after serving on numerous destroyers, a couple submarine tenders and a couple shore shore stations. Retired from the USS Sellars DDG 11. A very nice ship from Bath Shipsworks in Maine.With a super skipper,W.R.Johnson, a mustang with a Masters in Physics. Unfortunately he died soon after retirement from cancer.After retirement I worked for the next 20 years in the communications field in various parts of the world. It was a super second career. For the third 20 years we've been here in Luray, Va. on 21 acres. Presently I have 5 horses, 11 goats, two Longhorn cows,3 burros(they originally were running wild in Nevada), 1 hive of honey bees and a garden. Fortunately I also enjoy very good health at age 76. I had occasion to be towed from Sacramento, Ca. to Placerville, Ca. last night due to a broken automobile...The tow driver and I had a chance to discuss lots of things on the 50 minute trip. We touched on his military experience, 12 years Army where he frequently was on board ship for transportation and of course, my career. Anyway, just as I signed the documents and he was packing up to leave, he said,"can I ask you one question?" I said, go ahead. He said "one thing I would like to know, how come an E-7 in any other branch of the service is just an e-7? When did a navy chief become God?" unquote. and I might add, he was still being respectfull, he meant it. I don't believe I ever heard that mentioned before, and I just mention it now, because as I reflected upon it, he may have went a little too far in his description, however, it brings to bear the reputation of the Navy Chief..and it is very far reaching and totally respected, not just in the Navy.....Great site, Master Chief...Bill(ACC ret.1972)

Each Chief, Senior Chief, and Master Chief can look back on their career and there is always someone who headed them in the right direction. I had one named Joe Bibanco BT1 USN Ret. He was my first boss. He was, I thought the meanest SOB I ever met. But he made me a BT. I copied his leadership style and supervisory skills. He was my friend for the rest of his life. He passed away on 12 November from the big "C". I will miss him and his counsel. If not for him I don't think I would have even stayed in the Navy. Goodbye my friend, save a cool one for me.
