Name: HMCM(SW)Gene Haukoos USN Ret. From: Estherville, Iowa 51334 Time: 2000-09-01 02:55:52 Comments: Just checking the web. I am a retired master chief Hospital Corpsman. on 12 Aug 00 I attended the Homecoming for my first ship. USS Olreck DD 886. She was built in Orange Tx during WWII. She served the U.S. Navy for 37 years then was sold to Turky. A group of people in Orange Tx bought her back. She is now berthed at her home of birth. She looked a little rough around the edges but not bad for age. The group in Tx will fix her up fine. They plan on making her in to a museum. My shipmates aboard the Orleck taught me what the Navy was all about. The Chiefs Mess was a real goat locker. I think the only thing more forward on that ships was the chain locker. As jr. corpsman aboard I worked for a chief. He taught me the things I needed to know in order make it in the Navy and we are still friends 30 years later. As we are about to bring a new group of young men and women in to the Goat Locker I hope those of you still serving will have your fun with them. But remember to spend sometime bring them up to speed to the real meaning of CHIEF. |
