Comments: Just checking the web. I am a retired master chief Hospital Corpsman. on 12 Aug 00 I attended the Homecoming for my first ship. USS Olreck DD 886. She was built in Orange Tx during WWII. She served the U.S. Navy for 37 years then was sold to Turky. A group of people in Orange Tx bought her back. She is now berthed at her home of birth. She looked a little rough around the edges but not bad for age. The group in Tx will fix her up fine. They plan on making her in to a museum. My shipmates aboard the Orleck taught me what the Navy was all about. The Chiefs Mess was a real goat locker. I think the only thing more forward on that ships was the chain locker. As jr. corpsman aboard I worked for a chief. He taught me the things I needed to know in order make it in the Navy and we are still friends 30 years later. As we are about to bring a new group of young men and women in to the Goat Locker I hope those of you still serving will have your fun with them. But remember to spend sometime bring them up to speed to the real meaning of CHIEF.

I am retiring from the Navy Reserve in November at the age of 60 with 20 years 9 months navy time and 2 years 2 months active Air Force time. During the weekend of 16/17 Sep 2000 I went through the Chief initiation at Naval Air Station, Willow Grove, Pa. As it happened, the 16th was my first day to be paid as a chief. Is there anyone out there that went through initiation who was older than I am ? Thank you.

Went to Corpus Christi from boot camp and flew in PBM s for three years and from ther went to VF 52 and deployed on the Boxer, Wasp and Lexington. Then back to Corpus for a couple of years to a fighter training squadron. Then on to VP 16 in NAS JAX for 5 years. Made three major deployments to Argentia, Sigonella and Rota and many dets to Rosie Roads Bermuda etc. etc. Then on to Pax River Maryland VP 30 for three years or so. I met and Married My wonderful Wife Anne there and the we went on to VP 28 in Barbers Point Hawaii. Ther I made Chief and got transferred to VP 4 and had a very rewarding tour with a great bunch of sailors!!!!!! Then I was sent to recruiter school against my will and ended up retiring at age 38 . After retirement I went ot Gunsmith school In Denver, then to San Angelo, TX for a year and then on back home to San Antonio in 1972. I ran the civilian gun shop for about 7 or so years and then went to work at Fort Sam Houston as the Army Gunsmith for 15 years. I now have a little Pen turning buisness down here in San Antonio making pens, pencils, letter openers etc, etc out of Deer antler, Texas and exotic woods and all sorts of acrylics and going to craft shows. We also baby sit the Grand Children and do a little bowling. Sorry to be so long winded. Chief Robie

BZ - a great site! Already in touch with former shipmates thru the e-mail listing. I enlisted '54 w/boot at SDGO, then QM striker on BADOENG STRAIT (CVE 116). Hospital Corps in '56. Temporary commission/appointment as HMCA in '63. Retired '87 after commanding Naval Medical Materiel Support Command for five years. Chiefs and retired Chiefs (who returned to the workforce as Civil Service employees), continued to teach me throughout my career. Congratulations to all new CPOs! I'm sure your day was very memorable. I was initiated 27 AUG 80...there were so many selectees from a large number of commands, they had to do TEN initiations. So you see I've seen all the changes to the initiation processes. For the more mature CPOs, I can assure you of one thing; you'll still be proud of the most recent members to the world's best fraternity, the pinning ceremony and reading of the creed will still bring a lump to your throat and recall the memories of our own "Special Day."

One of my career goals was to be a "CHIEF" and now I am, initiated on 15 SEP 00. It takes a "TEAM" (T-ogether, E-veryone, A-chieves, M-ore) to be successful and to have success. Currently I am stationed at Norfolk Naval Brig until SEP 2003.

Still here in Great Lakes. Just wanted to say Welcome aboard to the newest Chief Petty Officers. Initiation isn't what it used to be but it's still possible to walk away at the end of the pinning ceremony filled with pride and emotions too hard to put into words. I absolutley love being a Chief and I never realize it more than on September 16th. What a great thing to be a part of. Retirement is staring me in the face (about 18 months) and I often wonder what I will do when I move away to a place where there is no Navy and I don't have a uniform to put on anymore or a troopy to mentor. If I could do this my whole life, I think I would. Kind of nuts huh? Also if anyone knows the whereabouts of newley initiated ITC Frank Cannizzaro (he's somewhere in FL) or ITC Karen Seckington, I would love to be able to pass on my best wishes.

If you had spoken to me on the 15th of sept. 2000 I would have mounted my most convincing argument about "Why initiation wasn't necessary". By 1230 on the 16th "The light had gone on" as I had been told by so many Chiefs. It was one of the best days of my life and one I'll remember forever. My wife told me I was still living it as I slept that night...complete with singing.

This email was set aside so that I could attempt to locate former shipmates of my father (DKC Burdette). My father is still alive at 81, and enjoys his Pearl Harbor Survivor Reunions each year. His duty stations were USS Worden (Pearl Harbor); USS DEWEY; Treasure Island; Adak; USS Baltimore; San Diego; USS BOXER; Naval Attache Norway; and finally Treasure Island USS CHICAGO. My dad made Chief during WWII, and retired after twenty + years. Anyone having served with him please send me a notice, and I will forward to my father. Thank you EOC(Sel)Richard Burdette

Joined in 1938. Graduate from weather guesser school in Lakehurst in November of 1940. Served on numerous ships, air station and weather centrals. However, years I am most proud of were 1943-45. When I was First Class and Chief aboard the most decorated ship in Naval history, USS Enterprise, know as the "Big E" to one and all. I retired in 1957, came to Alaska and have been here ever since. I started a number of new careers in both the public and private sectors. They were as follows: 1964-66 City Councilman, Fairbanks, Alaska 1966-70 Mayor of Fairbanks 1971-75 Lieutenant Governor of Alaska 1984-90 Alaska State House (Representing Anchorage) 1991-92 Anchorage Assemblyman 1998- Chugach Electric Board of Directors. In the private sector I am the owner of H.A."Red" Boucher & Assoc. and Alaska Wireless Technology. I have been engaged in what I call"computercating (Computer mediated information technology) since 1979 and have been involved in the evolution of Internet and other Information technologies. Recently we have started to video stream a weekly statewide television that I produce called Alaska On-Line. Go to http://www.alaskaonlinetv.com and take a peek. With December 7th not too far away you might enjoy the leading show about the Pearl Harbor attack. Al "Bomber" Patten, a retired CMM, and I dress up in our old uniforms (I will be buried in this one) and share the feelings of that day in 1941. Bomber was on NEVADA at Pearl, later on LEXINGTON when she went down in the Battle of the Coral Sea. From 1943-45 we served together aboard Big E until she got Zeked off of Kyushu on May 15, 1945. I think you will enjoy the story. It's great to have discovered the website and I will wrap up with this. I have served in a number of careers during my 80 years on this planet. However, being a Chief Petty Officer in the Naval Weather service tops them all. After all my Mother, Helen Isabell Cameron, was a Chief Yeoman USNR in WWI. H.A. "Red" Boucher, AGC USN (ret) 6920 Fairweather Drive Anchorage, AK 99518 email Voice (907) 349-2192 FAX (907) 349-7031 P.S. Good luck, happy forecasting. Master Chief, I'm MMC McDonald (Ret) and I have a pretty strange request. I have come in possession of a Master Chief's ring the was found in 1979. By it's size I'd guess it was a woman's. The date in the ring is 1975. I don't think there were to many female Master Chief's then. I'd like to return it if I can find the owner, Think you can help? Along with the ring was a heart shaped pendent. Thank you MMC Douglas McDonald

Just watched "The Caine Mutiny" (1954) again with Humphrey Bogart as the unfortunate Capt. Queeq. A rousing movie, but with one major element missing -- no chiefs! Only officers and white hats. In real life one salty old BMC could have straightened out those idiotic junior officers and together they could have helped Queeg manage the ship in the typhoon . . . but then there would have been no story, no stage play, no novel, and NO MOVIE==Ted
