Comments: Served on active duty from 1955 to 1981 - now serving our Navy in Navy Recruiting District, Atlanta as a 'civilian' - every year when new Chiefs come up for initiation, I feel the tug of the past. I am very fortunate to still be a part of the Navy since I was 17 years old - I AM a retired Senior Chief Petty Officer, not an ex - I was present at the A-bomb testing in Eniwetok and Bikini Atols, had shore duty at COMNAVFORJAPAN and some less exotic places, and was at sea on board BOXER, LEXINGTON, TORTUGA, SPHINX (in Vietnam) and USNS RANGE SENTINEL (well, yeomen (smart yeomen), didn't get that much sea duty).

Many, many highlights of my 30+ years. Amongst the most memorable: Being at USNH Gtmo during Bay of Pigs invasion and treating casualties. Being at Naval Hospital Bethesda on 11/22/63 and being assigned as honor guard (along with most of off duty crew) when President Kennedy's remains were brought to the hospsital for autopsy. Then being assigned to a 1st aid station on Pennsylvania Avenue on Sunday when his body was transferred from the White House to the Capitol. Being onboard USS America when the Vietnam War ended. We steamed in formation with 3 or 4 other carriers and a bunch of the 'little guys". An overhead fisheye picture was taken. In front of the America was the USS W.C. Lawe which was my next duty station.Being assigned to as Leading Chief for a group of Navy medical stations along the route of the funeral cortege for the Unknow Soldier of the Vietnam War.The most important day of my military career was of course the day I was initiated as a Chief Petty Officer onboard the W. C. Lawe. Retirement as a Master Chief Petty Officer. My retirement ceremony was at the Naval Hospital Bethesda. One of my side boys was my son, CTT2 John B. Bruneel, Jr.Most notably:Having an incredible NAVY WIFE for 22 of my Navy years. At time she literally raised our kids, ran the home, etc, etc, etc. by herself.

I retired from the deck of the USS Olimpia, while stationed aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, than in SLEP at NSY Philadelphia. I am currently the Technical Chief Officer for the Superior Court of Delaware. This is how I fund my important job, I'm the Regional Director of the U. S. Naval Sea Cadets Corps, Liberty Central Region 4.2 (Pennsylvinia). It is my great honor to work with and help prepare the youth of our nation for the twenty first centry and the Sea Services of our great nation. In my all too short Naval Career, I served aboard the USS Simon Lake AS-33, USS Stickel DD-888, USS Miller FF-1092 and USS Kitty Hawk CV-63.
