Far to many of our Sailors have no working knowledge of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I hope our Navy-Wide mess will take the time to review and then teach these all-important documents not only to CPO-selectees, but to all our Sailors. ( I read a small portion of each everyday at quarters and the Sailors like it!) Doesn't seem right to have Sailors pledge to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies... in their enlistment oath and not have a functional knowledge of its history or relevance in todays world. Comments: I served for 23 years and miss it everyday. A hearty hello to all I have served with. I hope some of you have a (fond) memory of me as I remember so many of you fondly. My best ship overall was USS Midway. E-division worked so hard keeping her running. Glad to see her as a museum. Hope to visit her along with all my E-div shipmates before I take that final voyage. Worst ship was USS Independence. Although a step up in comfort from Midway, had an adversarial wardroom that didn't trust her chiefs. Electric plant required twice as many electrical switchboard operators as Midway. Port and starboard liberty for engineers! I did enjoy my tour as head of Forward IC though. Much better working conditions than EMs. Still hate to see her scrapped though. Most exciting ship was USS Oldendorf. Although on her less than a year, it was a whirlwind tour that included Desert Storm, best CO (Cyrus Butt) and Chief Engineer (Myles Esmele) I ever served with, great liberty and a Combat Actio n Ribbon. Sunk off the coast of Washington state, not Hawaii as widely misreported. Working on a website for her. Only downside was contracting asthma and other cognitive maladies after being exposed to "something" off the coast of Kuwait. Most comfortable ship was USS John F. Kennedy as 3M Coordinator and MSC Supervisor. Got to see NYC twice before 9/11. looks like she too is becoming a museum. Most frustrating ship was USS Curts. Undermanned and not much liberty. History of ops and liberty port visits lost due to erroneous command operations reports submitted for 1993 and 1994. She was my last ship in commission until being put down in 2013. Not sure if they are selling her to Mexico or she will be in a future SINKEX. Best shore duty was SUBASE Pearl Harbor where I made chief. Worst shore duty was SERMC Mayport from which I retired. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have stayed on the JFK for the 2002 cruise. I wish for all who read this peace and prosperity in their lives.!
