I made Chief in 1984 on the USS Reasoner. I retired from active duty on July 31, 1993. I'm proud of my service in the U.S. Navy and it was a priviledge to wear the anchors of a Chief Petty Officer. Many of my fellow Chiefs inspired me and guided me on my journey and I hope to have done the same to those that came after me. One of our duties as QM's was to maintain the ship's deck log. Comments: I served on the U.S.S. Reeves (CG-24) for 8 years. As a seaman, I came aboard in Hawaii in 1977 and left the ship as a Chief in 1990. My last look at the Reeves was out my hotel window in Hong Kong as she left port. It was a strange feeling of happiness to be going back home and the loneliness of watching my ship go back to Japan without me.

When I retired back in 2007, the real Chiefs were a dying breed and I think that is where you got that Bureau Appointed E-7 from because they were slowly doing away with the traditional Chief's initiations.

Comments: Corpsman rating in the Navy is the best in the Navy. Learned a lot, saw a lot, did a lot. Don't recall NEC code for advanced x-Ray tech, but that changed when I joined the reserves after 21 years of broken service and was assigned to the Seabees with my old rate and rating. Best duty was at sea, and two tours as Command Chief of Det 101 with corpsmen, nurses, and physicians, a fantastic group of shipmates.. Hope this site is successful. Fair winds and following seas.

Comments: Entered in 1963 and transferred Fleet Reserve in 1983. My rating desires in boot camp (San Diego) were GM, EN or MM. After the testing, I was told I had two choices: RD or SO. I asked to be an surface RD. Naturally, I was sent to SO A school across the street. I really wanted to go to sea and be a skimmer Sonarman. But the training pipeline was over 32 weeks in 1964 so I switched over to the ProSub section. Then they extended sub training by 6 weeks and added 3 weeks of submarine electronics in Sub School. Then after requesting an FBM for my first tour they sent me to an old diesel boat in the Philly shipyard. It was an adventure from beginning to end.

Comments: I enlisted in 1964 at the age of 17, knowing I wanted to become a Chief Radarman and would spend 20 years in the Navy. I made Senior Chief Operations Specialist and had the opportunity to travel the world. I was transfer to the fleet reserve after 26 years in 1991 and the day after I transfered I went to work teaching in the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps in a public high school. I retired from teaching in 2007 after 16 years. I had the privilege of serving my country and wearing the uniform of the United States Navy from the age of 17 to the age of 60. I wish all my fellow Chief's fair winds and following sea's!

Went from Boot Camp to Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut and have been stationed in Naval Submarine Base Pearl Harbor, Hawaii my entire career.
