Duty Stations: Enlisted 1965, retired in 1995 at NAS Memphis. Made Chief at 17 years. Advanced to E7, E8 & E9 on first look. Earned the NEC for Flag Command Master Chief while in New Orleans. Spent most of my time as Command Master Chief of Readiness Commands in Scotia NY, Millington Tn and the West Bank in New Orleans along with a two tours on COMNAVRESFOR staff specializing in manpower policy. I enlisted at NARTU Memphis, did tours at NAS Glenview Ill, onboard the USS Myles C Fox (DD829) at Pier Kilo in Brooklyn NY, the reserve center in Little Rock AR (where I was initiated, ate from a pigs trough and endured the testing of my fellow chiefs) and two tours at Memphis Air Station.
Comments: Somewhere along the line my name changed to Master Chief and I answered to that today. The Goat locker is in my blood. My father, and his father before him, served in the Navy. My son, Christopher, continues the Simmons heritage by serving as a Warrant Officer in the Army. My daughter, Teresa, is married to a E7 in the Army. Thanks for establishing/maintaining the online CPO site; the Goat Locker.

Comments: I had some good times and some bad times during the 20 years and 12 days I was in the Navy. Of course, there were some really great times. For the most part, I met some really fine people. If I had it to do over again, chances are I would (with a couple changes here and there). There are three people who contributed greatly to my having ultimately succeeded in the Navy. I either never got the opportunity to express my appreciation or I was just too hard core to think about such things at the time. The first was my chief with the 1st Tank Battalion. Regrettfully, I can't remember his name. Maybe someday I'll find it on an old eval. Anyway, he gave me my first real chance at leadership when I was a newly frock 2nd Class. Being a corpsman with the Marines was a truly awesome experience. They expected a lot (pride, duty, leadership) of the corpsmen My chief was clear about his confidence in me and it made all the difference in the world. Then there was HMCM Marty Goldman. I must admit he was the last person in the world I would have expected as an advocate, but the man was like a bulldog. Thanks, Master Chief!! And, HMCM Terry Wilford - my sponsor at my initiation. Thanks for everything! And, thank you Chiefs for indulging me.

Comments: Hi, I enlisted in 1942 and retired in 1962. During the world war I served aboard the USS JOHN D. HENLEY DD 553. Battle stars for Guam, Siapan, Tinian, Iwo Jima and a couple others. After an operation the various task forces would come into an anchorage, I remember Eniwetok and Ulithye (not sure I spelled them correctly) and we who served during that time saw sights you younger chiefs will never see. What we saw was a anchorage with a lines of anchored battlewagons, of cruisers, of aircraft carriers, of destroyers and misc. and sundry other types of ships. It was a sight to behold. Now to the reason for this msg. I would love to have photos of these lined up ships to pass on to my childen and grandchildren. So if any of you good folks know where I could obtain copies I would be most grateful if you would let me know. Many thanks, Ken Goad

Wore a lot of hats (Facilities supervisor/Urinalysis Coordinator/Asst. Training Officer/etc/etc) Chief Diaz must be filling the shoes of my buddy SKC Irvine (great guy, stranger sense of humor than mine, got in trouble once in awhile, threw me out of his office more than once). The kind of guy I worried about if we had to do a CACO notification with. His suggested speech to the Next of Kin one day: "sir/ma'm, we have some good news and some bad news today; the good news is your son is coming home for the holidays; the bad news....." You can figure out the rest.
I would have loved to have spent ten years there but the Navy had plans to send me out to sea again, so....
All you new Chiefs out there are doing a great job during tough and trying times. I'm presently working for the Navy as a civilian and I know what goes on with respect to present trends, budgets, schedules, etc!
Keep at it; Bravo Zulu from a guy who's been retired almost 20 years; the retirement bennies are well worth it. I'd do my career all over again if I could (with a few changes of course, but not too many)

Yikes.. someone needs to straighten them out... anyway, was watching AFN here in Europe and notice that there are white hats wearing khaki's ....Yikes what the ^ *(*()++ is up with that.... when I went to boot camp in Great Lakes in 77. I admire the bluejacket and look foward to one day making chief... and wearing khakis... Now white hats are wearig khakis... I have talked with other Chiefs that are on active duty today and they said it was one of the former MCPONS idea.. as an incentive... Disagree totally... if a seaman, airman or fireman wants an incentive... let him or her work hard as we all did to wear the uniform... when I was initiated in 1990 I was in tears during pinning ceremony... and understood the trials and tribulation during the intitiation...It is the only achivement to this day that gives me the greatest joy... out of all of my accomplishments...In fact, I still have my creed in my office and I have been rtired now for 9 years... after 23 years of activ duty... I am shock that our uniform is being partly worn...it is our Navy and no one elses... anyway, I hope that todays Chiefs if you havent already raise the issue with MCPON... Because a white hat wearing a khaki shirt makes me sick. I dont worry about officers as they dont have a clue... besides we are still the oldest fraternity and the only group that wears USN on our collars... emphasis on USN.... because WE ARE THE UNITED STATES NAVY.
