The Goat Locker CPO Deck Log Jul-Sept 2007

CPO email addresses are available by clicking on the CPO's name. I also have a separate listing of just CPO email addresses available. Please note that all email addresses worked when placed on this page. Overtime some may not work due to Chiefs changing their Internet providers. You can save the file and use your browser to view it off line or you can view it with any word processor. Use your browsers "find" or "search" command and search for shipmates by rate, name or command. To even further keep entries secure from SPAM I have added a "2" after every @ symbol in each email address. So if you go to email someone remove the "2" from the address.

Comments: To all my friends, It is time for me to move on to other things in what life has to offer. But the times I have spent in the Navy it etched in my heart. For it has been a wounderful adventure. I have been retired now for only 3 months but seems like an eternity. Charish the friendships you make in the Navy because the civilian life does not work that way. People come and go to work without that bond we have. To my fellow chiefs, teach as hard as you can for the young ones, for they will soon be the leaders when you retire and hope they do as good of a job as you or better because they will be the ones who will keep you and your family safe. Comments: To my "New Family", Please allow me to take a moment to express my sincerest gratitude to the Willow Grove Mess(s) and all the Genuines from around the country that took part in my “Course Adjustment” through out the 13 weeks. For a guy who thought he knew enough finds out that at times he didn’t have a clue. There are many, many individuals that need to be commended personally and acknowledged but, in doing so, I would tie this log up for hours. I had no idea how big that “THE MESS” is. With that being said, Senior Chief Lindsey, Thank You for being a hard ass and giving a total stranger a chance but, most important, showing your compassion. But, I will have to say this, Ed and Scott Thank you!! I Love you guys…. for taking the time. I know you didn’t have to sacrifice your family and time for me. To the MACS, once again coming to the rescue, I hope one day I can return the favor to each and every one of you, above your expectations. To be accepted that afternoon and to have a receiving line as long as it was, to shake hands and hug strangers that I have never met but, to be greeted as though I new them all my life was really over whelming. Thank you to each and everyone one of you and especially my fellow Chiefs of 2007

Comments: Congratulations to all the new Chief Petty Officers. Three things you must keep in mind as THE CHIEF. 1. Take care of your troops, they are the ones who got you where you are today. They are the future and the most valuable resourse of the Navy. Communication with your troops is the key to the success of all. 2. Take care of and train theJunior Officers. They have the college education, but not the knowledge that time brings. You are the experience behind the decisions they make, sanity check theirdecisions and if they are wrong, talk them through to the right decision. Your Junior Officer may someday come back as your Commanding Officer. 3. Take care of the Mess. Remember the Chiefs Mess is larger than just the Chiefs in your command. Every Chief in the Navy, past and Present is part of the Mess. Look to the Mess for assistance when you need help. The night of your pinning was perhaps the greatest night of your life but the day after, while you are still gleaming with pride, the hard part starts. You are now "The Chief". Your troops are not going to look at you the same way they did just last week. You are now supposed to have the answer to all their questions. Don't be afraid to say, "I don't know, I will get back to you" but when say that, make sure you get the answer and get back to them. Again Congratulations on your promotion. Be proud of your accomplishment.BE THE CHIEF!

Comments: Hello to all Chiefs. I served active duty on USS Von Steuben, SSBN-632 as a Sonar Technician from 1968 to 1972 then continued on Navy Reserve. I was selected CPO in 1990. There probably isn't anybody who went to Chief's board more times than I before I was selected. I was finally selected on the twelfth (12th) time. That took major determination and drive to finally get there but I am very proud to have been selected. The Chief's community is a wonderful fraternity which no other service has and all should feel great pride in having gone through the initiation process. I'd enjoy hearing from many of my fellow Chiefs.

Comments: Just Killing a little time before hitting the chow line. My wife does the fixing. Congrate to the new " Chiefs" Ran into one of you in Georgetown Ky about three weeks ago. He announced himself and stated he could handle any situation. Of course he was thinking, "This Master Chief is retired". Little did he know that the power of retirees often invades when least expected. Through the internet I found his CMC and his sponsor. I wish him well. YUC, YUC, YUC. I had the great fortune to join the Mess in May of 75. There were 30 of them and me. What a day, but the best part was when all those Chiefs shook my hand and said," welcome to the mess Chief" I am also proud that I made Chief off of the first selection board. God Bless and keep up the tradtions of the mess

Comments: I had a couple years of active duty in the late 1970's and then spent the next 18 years in the Naval Reserve out of Houston Texas.  In some ways my military career was one of the more rewarding parts of my life.  It was in the Navy that I learned the most about people and had opportunities to grow the most as person.  The military teaches you about discipline and builds character in way not seen in the civilian world.  I personally believe all young people would become more productive members of society if they were given the "privilege" of serving their country.  I take pleasure in the fact that I am retired Navy and proudly wear the uniform when appropriate at military functions. Regards, Chief Sanford

Comments: It aint about how hard you can hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward; that's how winning is done...Now if you know what your worth, then go on out and get what your worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits, not pointing fingers saying your not where you want to because of him, her, or anybody. Cowards do that....

Comments: I got out after 7 years and tried quite a few things but nothing matched the excitement of those "few moments of terror" every couple of months on a sub. I came back in as EM1(SS) with the thought of subs. Hymie had made some rules about people forgetting too much after 7 years away from nuke power and I couldn't go back to subs. They wouldn't even give me a test to take. Believe me I hadn't forgotten what was pounded into me, but I became a Target rider. Then, nearing retirement, I got orders to SBU 26. Almost as much fun as subs. It was a great twilight tour.

Comments: Sorry I haven't joined before this. I am very proud of having been a permanent appointment CPO. Made the mistake of going LDO as it caused an early retirement from active duty.Financially it is paying off now but ,still,in retrospect I should have stayed a CPO,the best rate in the Navy
