Comments: Friends and shipmates: Wanted to post this short note. My Father in law, Franz Grissom MUCM USNRET passed away last week after fighting cancer for a few years. Master Chief Grissom was one, if not the, last enlisted band leader in the Navy. He was the founder, composer, leader and lead arranger for the United States Navy's Steel drum (also known as Pans) Band for many years, I beleive during the late 50's and early 60's. It still exists today, as does his musical arrangements. If anyone out there knew Franz, and has anymore to add please feel free to e-mail us at norris7550@msn.com. Another great Chief on his way to that last duty station. Neil Norris CTTCM(SS) USNRET

It was one heck of career! I miss being with the CPO's and being part of the mess. That was two thirds of the career and was the hardest part to give up. I really enjoyed being at sea, but didn't enjoy being away from my two sons. Now I have the second best job in the world. I get to help veterans get through the VA paperwork quagmire by working as a Veteran Service Officer for Wyandot County in Ohio. Thanks for letting me update.

I was just reveiwing the comments of some of you on the deck log. Congrats to those who will be on the CPO selection list. You can be proud of your accomplishment. I have a plaque on my wall I'm very proud of. It is inscribed with these words: "INITIATION a day to remember". It is ashame one of the greatest and proudest moments in a sailors life has become a Transition. I ardently hope a few of my old Shipmates will make it "a day to remember" for their "charges". For those of you not on this years list be proud, be professional and press on and seek to achieve substained superier performance, not just walk-on-water evals.!

Reading some of the other comments in the log jogged my "sea story" genes into action. Back in 2003, Selection results were released and all selectee were gathered at the Base theator for their first "training" session. The Base Master Chief asked all selectees to stand. He then asked those who had attained CPO status in 12 years to sit...with a less then enthusiastic report coming from the Khaki crowd. He continued in this way through the masses....13, 14, 15, 16, 17 years, all but 4 were seated. In the end All Navy Photographer Mates stood. One was selected at 24 years (broken service - reserves back to active) One had 22 years Active Duty. One had 19 years and 5 months. One had 18 years. All had pristine evals with gobs of at sea LPO experience. Most had multiple Warfare pins. I was one of them.... Now, I look ahead to my retirement in September, and see only 3 PH's will be selected this year to Chief. 20 JOC's, 1 LI or DM (can't recall which). I am not distrought as one would think. Why? PH1's in the navy have some of the best Evals, job experience (LPO at sea), and motivation imaginable. (Where do ya think all that cool S.E.A.L. Footage comes from out in the bad, bad world. Sometime in the next two years PH, JO, LI, and DM will merge into the MC (Mass Communications Specilist) Rating. Having reviewed many evals from these rating.....only one conclusion can be drawn......the former PH's will dominate the boards for a few years. Good news, since the JO rating quatas this year is 20 new Chiefs. JO's have historically always doubled or even quadrupled the quotas for the other media ratings, but most JO1's don't have anywhere near the responsibility of CPO eligible PH1's. My advice to JO1's...Get busy and look for the Leadership jobs. Although it may already be too late.....unless your one of the lucky 20.!

I'm currently stationed at Assault Craft Unit 5 on board Camp Pendleton, CA. It's July 1, 2005 and I wanted to comment on the quotas for this CPO advancement cycle. Holy cow! I haven't seen numbers even close to these since the early 90's. There are a handful of 1st classes at ACU-5 who will be extremely disappointed that they didn't make board this year. However, those that did make board, we look forward to guiding them through their upcoming transition.!
