WWII & Merchant Marine Vessels: I'm looking for anyone who may have been on the SS Florida - SS William Leavitt - and SS Park Benjamin: My daddy was a member of the Navy Armed Guard during WWII - these are the Merchant ships that he was on -- I've been working on family ancestry and would like to find anyone who might have known him -- His name was James Lee Chavis - He passed way in Oct of 1986 - i've done a great deal of reseach into the Armed Guard in general but would like to communicate with someone who was on these vessels to find out where it went - I know it was on the Murmansk runs - one of the vessels may have carried troops for the D-Day invasion -- anyone out there that may have any knowledge of these vessels - I sure would appreciate communcating with you Thanks

Duty Stations: USS CANOPUS AS34 6/80 to 5/83 - Commander, Mine Warfare Command (Main Base, Charleston) 6/83 to 8/85 transferred to Active Reserves: Harrisburg PA - NAVACTSUK Det 504 from 8/85 to 5/96 -Did all the traveling that I didn't get to do in Charleston - finally got to see London and Norway (It's cold up there) spent a good deal of time in Norfolk and Naval Weapons station Earl (NJ) moved to Tenn - now member of SPAWAR 109 - for those of you who happen upon this and know me personally - I'm still pluggin away - I retire in March of 2004 - long time but have loved every minute of it = I'm hoping that some of my teachers and mentors (SKCS Wyans was the greatest teacher that I had - much of his teaching and instruction has carried me forward - I'm glad he was my first mentor when I was still a slick sleve -) Initiation time is a time that I have looked back on many times over the past ten years - but knowing that no matter when I go in the world - I have friends & companions and a helping hand when needed is a great feeling. I tell selectees that the time is hard but when the pinning is done - they will understand that it was all worth it and to lift their heads high and be proud of who they are = members of one of the biggest fraternities in the world. Sorry !!! I get a little mellon-coly this time of year. I'm hoping that some of those Old Freinds of mine find this and let me know how they are doing -- meeting new friends isn't bad either
