Formally an SM before converting to NC. That I know I am the only sailor in the US Navy that ever raised the skull and cross bones aboard a navy ship. The Commodore was a little upset. I pulled the plug at NATTC, Millington, TN in Aug 79. I still miss the commradarie and team work. Civilians don't have that.

I'm saddened by the loss of a Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS Thach. He was struck by a SH-60 rotor as the rotor head was disengaged and the blades where dipping. He was one of the flight crew aboard the SH-60.

Second, when I was on POGY, the CO had a quote on the bulkhead that read something like this, " lord, protect me. For the sea is so great and my boat is so small". I'm getting close to "forced" retirement (30 years) haha, and I have always had an attachment to that quote. I'd like to be able to use it in some way for my retirement. The ninth Nimitz Class Nuclear Aircraft Carrier, Ronal Reagan, was christened yesterday by Mrs. Reagan with the traditional champagne bottle. It was the Reagan's 49th wedding anniversary. This newest carrier has been 5 years and millions of dollars in the making to this point, still about 2-3 years to go. The Reagan has 45,000 tons of steel, a 4.5 acre flight deck, will hold about 80 aircraft, is 1,092 ft. long will hold about 6,000 sailors and has a 50 year life expectancy. I just heard a bit here, a glimpse of the event on TV, not much more. (was aboard CVAN-65, USS Enterprise from 66-70)

Great Place. Lots of stuff here for everyone. I look forward to serving with all of you here. I joined the US Navy on 01 September 1982. Went to boot camp in San Diego, then MS "A" School. I got station at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. Transferd to the USS Lexington (AVT-16)also in Pensacola, in 1986 till 1991 when it decomed it. Cross-rated to Damage Controlman. (Awsome Decision). From there I was transfered to Fleet Training Group, Guantanamo Bay Cuba from January 1992. Great tour of duty. Transfered to Fleet Training Center Mayport Florida in June of 1995. Then the Wonderful Detailers terminated my shore duty and sent me to the USS Simpson (FFG-56) in Norfolk, Va in 1997. It is now 2001 and I am getting ready to transfer to Fleet Training Group in Mayport. Looking to retire from there. It's been Great Chatting with you all. Paul

Comments: Joined USN 1975, spent 3 yrs at NWC China Lake CA, 2 yrs NEPMU#5 San Diego, CA and then went to IDC school in SD. First shipboard duty USS DENVER LPD-9, short tour on USS HORNE CG-30 and then LCPO of ER at NAVHOSP S.D. Went back to sea in Jan 90 USS O'BRIEN DD-975 and then follow on sea tour PRECOM DDG-56 JOHN S MCCAIN. Spent 2 yrs NAVSPECWARCEN Coronado, CA and 1 yr at COMPHIBGRU 3 S.D and now back to sea as the C/MC of PRECOM DDG-81 WINSTON S CHURCHILL. Hope to follow on with one more sea tour as an C/MC to end my career.

Comments: Recruit training and Navy Storekeeper School RTC San Diego 1955, Naval Supply Center, Guam,Marianas 1955 to 57, Naval Schools Command Treasure Island 1957 to 60, USS SALUTE MSO 470, USS ROBERT L WILSON DD 847 ON to Navy Research and Developement Norfolk, back to sea USS VERNON COUNTY LST 1161 Homeported Yokosuka, but most of the time in brown water in Vietnam the on to USS ARNOLD J ISBELL DD 869 homeported Long Beach and then to Fleet Overhaul Assistance Program, while there I was detached to Atarctic for three months pertaining to my job in Long Beach and then I retire in 1974 from there and settled in the San Joaquin Valley of California and raised my family of five and now I have eleven grand and one great grand chidren and the CO (my wife of 43 years) and I spend my spare ties with my family in these grand Sierra Mountains for some great fishing and camping> a great life so far and I hope all of you have the same.
